One prophet foresees a near future where credit cards may replace collection plates in churches with a “tithe now, pay later” concept. The notion blends finance with worship as digital giving expands.
Earl R. Dunn, 75, member of a pioneer Andrews family, died Thursday in a Jal hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Jal and burial was in Cooper Cemetery. He moved to Andrews in 1908 with his family, later worked at the bank, ran a grocery, and served at the light plant before retiring to Odessa. Survivors include his wife and four nephews and four nieces.
The chamber schedules Business Education Day for October 1 with high schools dismissed at 2 30 p m. Businesses set up tours for students under the direction of chamber president Lowell McGee.
Firefighters battled an early model wooden tank battery burning at the Sun Oil Lease fifteen miles west of Andrews on the Seminole Goldsmith Road. The blaze persisted despite water application as the oil boiled, requiring several hours and two reblazes before the battery was completely extinguished.
Army Sergeant Billy EF Carruth 21, son of Mr and Mrs William J Carruth, received the Bronze Star Medal on July 1 at Fort Carson Colorado. He earned it for meritorious service in ground operations against hostile forces in Vietnam while serving as a squad leader with Company C 3rd Battalion 7th Infantry 5th Infantry Division Mechanized at Fort Carson.
Four guns were nabbed by shoplifters at Western Auto on Friday. A couple traveling through town talked with the owner about refrigerators while one selected firearms. They left with the guns and were later found missing as the sheriff’s office issued a bulletin with no leads yet.
The county library hosts an adult literacy program on Monday Tuesday and Thursday nights with many students and high school volunteers. Organizers Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Byrne urge local adults to help one or two evenings weekly to assist in reading and English practice. Call 3-5071 or 3-524 to volunteer.
Supt E A Brenholtz says schools dismiss on Thursday at the regular time and return Monday morning. Representatives from the American Book Company will confer with Andrews faculty during the workshop to discuss textbooks for the coming year across departments.
The Salvation Army, active in Andrews, is described as always ready to help those in distress. Lee Hulen and Reeder Price, local officers, explain how the organization screens need, aids travelers, provides meals, hospital visits, and emergency items like glasses or dentures, and assists in disasters.
The Andrews Mustangs travel to Denver City for their second game after a 13 21 loss at Lubbock Coronado. The series stands 9 4 in Andrews favor with a history of tight matches and prior blowouts from 1946 to 1959, while Denver City fields a heavier line and rebounded from a season opener loss.
The Andrews school board reviewed a traffic survey for NW Ave G and NW 2nd 3rd and 4th submitted by Police Chief Ray Robbins. After discussion of crossing problems the board asked the city to study solutions and voted to hold an executive session to discuss a personnel matter.
A planning meeting led by John Burger of the retail committee approved a Christmas parade in December a window treasure hunt a sleigh full of gifts and a guessing contest. Attendees included Leland Williams Jake Springer Clarence Parker Elmer Morrow Jerry Hotchkin J C Howell Preston Van Hanken and Burger.
Leslie Emfinger was elected three year committee member of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service county committee. M. M. Fisher Jr. was named first alternate and H. J. Campbell second alternate. Ellison Tom Jr. has two more years to serve as a committeeman and Gordon Cox one. Lee W. Tabor reports ACP funds are available to producers for practices through year end with a $1000 per person limit.
The Andrews area clarifies that Dr. W. O. Havens remains at 314 NW Ave. B after moving his clinic there about two years ago.
County commissioners in a special session approved a 25 per month raise to park workers to close the gap with road and bridge operators. The action covers a list of named park staff and sets terms while bids for a motor grader were rejected and re advertised with a trade allowance on a used 1955 model.
