Local business leaders plan a citywide promotion to lift trade. Merchants urge residents to join the Community Value program, promising real savings and a curbside showcase of offers. A numbered list in next week’s News will detail participating firms and costs.
The first bale of cotton produced and ginned in Andrews in three years was recorded Saturday by H. H. Davis from 1970 pounds of pulled cotton. The gin had not operated since 1952. Projection of countywide harvest estimates and details about ginning quotas follow, with community contributions totaling a jackpot for the bale’s bringer.
Stanolind Oil and Gas Company starts test runs at the Midland Farms gasoline plant located south of Andrews. John R. Evans says operations will start October 1 as a compression plant with 10 million cu ft of gas daily and condensate sent to North Cowden for fractionation.
Andrew Quarterback Club members watched film of the Andrews Big Spring game and heard coaches discuss Monahans contest. They praised the Mustangs defensive play and noted four backs nursing minor injuries but available for tonight. Denver City scouts highlighted Mike Tinley as a versatile scoring threat in West Texas.

Three Odessa youths aged 13 Beverly 12 Donny and Earnest 10 ran away from school and home hitchhiking toward Denver City. Deputy Sheriff Ray Phillips found them and they stated they preferred to live with their father and avoid Odessa schools. The trio were returned to Odessa.
The Andrews High School Band defends its Class AA crown as bands from West Texas and Eastern New Mexico join the Lubbock Panhandle South Plains Fair opening parade on September 27. Cash awards of 100 and 50 dollars are given to top bands, with School Day free for all students.
At Permian General Hospital two injured children Steven Harris and Brenda Harris were released after three weeks of care. Both sustained multiple fractures from a car wreck. they left for Odessa to stay with grandparents A C Rumbaugh as nurses and staff expressed mixed emotions. Their mother remains hospitalized with injuries, expected to stay for about two more months.
Andrews Mustangs enter the season's second home game as clear favorites against Denver City Mustangs. Denver City comes off a season opener loss to Seminole and a setback to Tohoka. Fans buy tickets briskly though few out of town supporters expected. Band and United Fund drive halftime show planned with Band Jive encore.
Denver City routed Andrews 43 to 14 last night, continuing a notorious feud dating to a 53 to 7 humiliation two seasons earlier. Clarence Reed and Charles Lenamond starred for Denver City in a game marked by high emotions and penalties. In oil news, Basin Petroleum completed Queen's sand No. 1-A Gardner, with potential of 11 275 barrels daily from 33.4 gravity oil, plus water. Shell opened No. 30 University in Southeast Andrews County, yielding 248 barrels of oil and 94 water in a multi pay interval.
The Fall Fellowship Convention of the Christian Churches of district four starts tomorrow at 1 PM at the First Christian Church in Andrews. Rev. Harold Glen Brown of Midland’s Memorial Christian Church delivers three talks on Our Year of Stewardship. W. P. German Jr. will speak at 5 PM on church unity. Banquets at 6 PM include adults at the community building and youths at the church hall with speakers Rev. Walter A. Hehl and Mrs. Harold G. Brown.
Bids let for the First Baptist Church auditorium project include Midwest Lumber Co of Midland at 119 800 dollars for base construction and City Electric of Andrews at 4 848 dollars for electrical work. Plumbing heating and air conditioning to be let next week. Total construction about 150 000 dollars, seating 900 with potential 1300, six nurseries, and eventual remodeling into classrooms and a 900 seat Sunday School building.
The Andrews county golf course will collect a $1.00 green fee during weekdays and $1.50 on Sundays and holidays. J. W. Dixon, the course administrator, announced the change yesterday.
Elliott E. McNeeley of Great Western Drilling was pulled by a cathead rope on a drilling rig southwest of Andrews while freeing an eight inch drill collar. He suffered a dual fracture of the right arm and a fractured shoulder, and was rushed to Permian General Hospital after the incident late Wednesday night.
An all-out publicity push for the Andrews County United Fund drives launched this week by the executive committee targets all county areas. The October 1 to October end drive aims for 8598 dollars to support Cancer Heart Fund Red Cross Boy Scouts Girl Scouts and USC. A large thermometer sign will be placed at the courthouse square to show daily progress. The high school band will back the drive at the Denver City Andrews game halftime. Max Ramsey county attorney will speak September 30 on KMID-TV urging residents to give a days wage, a five minute spot donated by KMID. Albert Sybesma chairs the drive and asks residents to plan now to donate a days wage to quickly meet the quota.
Nav al Aviation Cadet William P Lyons son of Mr and Mrs W C Lyons of Andrews Texas graduated from Hartford High School and attended the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville Arkansas before entering the Naval Aviation Cadet Program at Naval Air Station Dallas Florida Pensacola base hosted the ceremony.
An invitational amateur roping event is scheduled at two o clock Sunday afternoon at the local arena. West Texas ropers including Billy Chesney Buford Chesney Andrews Mery Thorn ton Monahans T A Foutch Jack McReynolds Buz Hudson Douglas Hudson and Sea Braves will rope four calves each for an overall average. Open jackpot ropings and an open barrel race for girls are also on the program. Admission is free.
The Mathis Feed Store has moved from five miles west of Andrews into town, new owner Charley Boyd, location in the Old Nix cafe building. The store will carry a full line of Purina feeds for poultry livestock and swine alongside other line feeds.
Plans for the Andrews County Fair highlight a poultry show, agricultural and oil exhibits, harvest queen crowning by Andrews High School juniors, a grand parade, and a county wide amateur show. Float entries require sponsor cooperation and a five dollar entrant fee. Amateur night is October 8 with prizes for local talent.
Andrews Farmer's Coop Gin announced that eleven bales had been ginned late Thursday afternoon. Ben Keith brought in 5 bales, H. H. Davis 4, Bill Fason 1, and Edward Fowler 1. W. L. Swift of Abilene, Texas is chief ginner with A. B. Morgan as assistant ginner, and Mrs. Esterline Crump serves as bookkeeper.
