A visiting delegation notes the shifting cattle market with Illinois and Texas buyers shaping summer sales. Ranchers and packers discuss feed efficiency, costs, and profits as cornfields store and finish cattle for winter markets amid ongoing industry changes and proposed reforms.
An Illinois group touring West Texas ranches observed ranch lands with 200 fraction sections, sizes of 175 to 225 acres for many farms, large mother cows and yearling calves, and impressive horses. They noted a neighbor from Whiteside County buying and shipping 365 head of steer calves from the Andrews ranch and praised the H. G Bedford herd nearby.
Andrews volunteers battled an 11 05 a m fire at the Mustang Cafe caused by wiring. Visitors from Illinois toured local sites including the town stadium and oil pumps, then debated taxes showing Andrews levies far higher than in Whiteside County and other areas.
The Snyder Tigers beat the Andrews Mustangs 37 8 in Friday night action capitalizing on two fumbles and two interceptions to roll to their season opening victory.
Ervin W. Luedtke of the Texas Real Estate Association spoke to the Andrews Board of Realtors and guests at the T. J. Ranch House dinner on Friday night September 18. He urged stronger Real Estate License Act support and more broker and salesman education to offset lower licensing standards elsewhere.
Department answered two fire alarms Friday afternoon. Four hundred pounds of cotton and a cotton trailer belonging to 4 H club boy Will Ed Waldrup were destroyed by fire about p m. Mrs Waldrup said the cotton was already burning when they went to the field Friday afternoon to pick. Cause of the fire was undetermined. A cooking stove grease fire in the west part of town had already been extinguished before firemen arrived. No damage was reported.
Honolulu Oil reports Ellenburger wildcat No. 11-C J. E. Parker be drilled 12 500 feet west of Andrews, plus Bakke North field tests at 9 500 feet and a four well Block 6 Devonian test near Andrews. Additional rigs include Logsdon No.11-B, Union Oil No. 11-B, and Ralph Lowe Wildcat No.1 Magnolia Morgan west of Andrews with 11 500 foot bottom.
Judge G C Olsen denied an injunction shielding electrical contractor Routhardt from license revocation by the City of Andrews. The case grew from a two month dispute with the Electrical Board after inspector Opal Nix prompted a license revocation recommendation. The council held hearings and, despite appeals, revoked the contractor’s license in a special meeting.
August water usage rose to 77 million gallons amid dry hot weather. Total pumped volume reached 85 million gallons for the two months, with receipts climbing to 43 287 dollars. Sewer and garbage receipts totaled 8 087 dollars. Sixteen new water line taps and 32 sewer line taps were added. In six months 190 new customers were added, totaling 2 730 customers.
Andrews residents may attend a free hypnotism demonstration Tuesday afternoon at 4 15. James Fetz will perform blindfolded through downtown and headline a two hour show at the high school auditorium on West 3rd Street and Avenue E at 8 p m. Beta Sigma Phi and City Council sponsor Hypno drama.
A. O. Dry, 36, died in John Sealy Hospital Galveston thirty days after suffering burns from an August 18 oil and gas well rig explosion near Patricia. Dry, assistant superintendent of Sharp Drilling Co., had burns over 70 percent and was blown from the rig floor along with four others. He and his wife lived at 708 NE 4th in An Recently Mrs. Dry moved the family trailer to Midland. Burial set for Metropolis Illinois.
