County hospital sale under discussion draws countywide concern

The Commissioners Court debates selling the Andrews County Hospital on October 4 to private bidders. Gin to Be Ready Soon for Cotton Crop

The Co-Op gin will start ginning this year s cotton crop next week as warm dry weather bursts cotton bales. Bill Woods carried a bale to Seminole for ginning this week with 400 acres of cotton planted on the McCollum farm. Peeples reports 400 acres planted and an average of a quarter bale per acre. maize and kaffir are good.

Club 4-H Club Boys Win Cash Prizes At Lions Luncheon

Six 4-H Club boys received cash prizes at a Lions Club luncheon. Richard Bohanan won $25, Robert Keith $15, Robert Forbes $10, Melvin Cotten $7.50, with Ross Bullard and Carol Stump tying for $5. Prize awards followed tomato and vegetable growing by the boys. County agent H L Atkins praised the effort and announced the 4-H fair would be held Oct 11.

Ford Agency to Rent New Crane County Building

Hal Lonis announced a 60 by 120 foot concrete tile structure on the Fountain Grill corner north of Humble station. It will be leased by Jack Young of Crane and John E. Smith of Monahans for a Ford agency. Work to start immediately.

Kermit Road Nearly Complete In Andrews County

County engineer Hugh Dixon announced Monday that caliche will reach the last five miles of the Andrews Kermit road. Only about two miles remain at the extreme end near the Winkler county line before the first coat speeds up topping. Deep sand forces dump trucks to back down the road bed.

Highway funds to match county for Big Bend road expansion

The Texas Highway Commission will match county funds for the Broadway to the Big Bend route in Dawson and Andrews counties at 75 25 percent. A 22 foot highway may be built with up to 225000 in 1948 and 1949. Officials plan a two county paving plan from Andrews to Lamesa and Dawson county already has 12 miles closer to Andrews.

Miller Buys Interest In Corner Drug

Lynn Miller of Perryton Texas has purchased a half interest in the Corner Drug Store and will arrive in Andrews this week to help manage the store. He is a registered pharmacist formerly with Rexall in Perryton and is married with two children. Reverend C C Curtis recommended Andrews and the Corner Drug, and Mr Miller comes highly recommended.

Curtis Brothers builder admitted to Fort Worth hospital

Alfred Curtis of Curtis Brothers Construction Co. entered Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth for a bone operation by Dr. Clayton after a December car wreck caused a broken leg.

Highway talk sparks scramble among West Texas towns

The Odessa American notes a failed meeting of the Broadway to the Big Bend Highway Association. Delegates fought, accomplished little, and highways were blamed for local town rivalries. The piece urges building the Andrews to Lamesa route to protect regional access and warns rivals may route traffic via Vernon, Crowell, Snyder, Big Spring, and Garden City.

Gas reserves in Texas could run out within 15 years

W H Kittrell Jr former state Democratic official argues in Scene Magazine that Texas natural gas may be exhausted by around 1962 if current consumption trends persist. He proposes forming a Texas Conservation Association to push policies stopping waste and diverting remaining reserves from oil production lines.

Pure Oil Company and Humble Oil test well No. 1 E A Cowden in the Dollar Hide field of Southwest Andrews County 1980 feet from West and 660 feet from South in section 24 Illenburger drillstem test at 10068 feet with a 2500 foot water blanket flowing oil and water within 27 minutes eight inches oil in the tank in first hour and 47 minutes. Second hour yields 7 barrels. A test at 9990-10033 feet in Ellenburger top indicates 50 to 75 barrels oil per hour. Operators plan further drilling on new hole. Fire Chiefs Hear On Traffic Code Penalties for Fire Units

Opal Nix, Andrews Fire Chief, received a notice from the Texas Fire Insurance Division detailing new State Uniform Traffic Code provisions effective Sept 5 1947. It covers following fire apparatus prohibitions crossing fire hose and penalties for misdemeanors with fines from one to two hundred dollars.

Martin Outpost Produces Oil From Ellenburger Test

The Martin Outpost field well in section 22 reports a test result after initial mud acid treatment. It flowed 290 barrels of 43.2 gravity oil in eight hours with 35 barrels in the final hour and a gas oil ratio of 155 to 1. No petroleum signs were observed prior to testing.

October 11 Set as Date for 4-H Boys Fair

Andrews Lions Club set October 11 as the date for the Boy s 4 H Club Fair. About 150 in cash awards will be offered with classes for field crops garden produce poultry Jersey cattle and Hereford steers. Local scouts women s demonstration clubs and Electric Service Company will have exhibits and premiums will be listed in a future News issue.
