Andrews firemen tackled a tank battery fire at Mobil Shafter Lake Unit No. 79 around 4 p.m. Lightning caused an explosion of two 500 barrel tanks but officials reported no injuries.
Chris Huckabee of Box 1451 posted a perfect score in the weekend football upset slate to win the News Football Contest. He picked Houston over Baylor Seminole over Brownfield Tech over Colorado and Dallas over Philadelphia. Second place went to H D Hall and Gabriel Natividad with 21 and 27 in tiebreakers. Huckabee won $10, Hall $5, Natividad $2.50. Entries must be dropped at the Prescription Shop on Northeast Mustang by 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Odessa man E. J. Guthrie, 48, was arrested by the Andrews Sheriff's office and charged with two counts of theft. The alleged theft involved two well servicing elevators worth about $1,000 each at two southeast Odessa rig sites. Deputies and Texas Rangers recovered the equipment. Guthrie was arrested in Odessa and brought to Andrews where bonds of $10,000 each were set.
