In Snyder Texas the Andrews Mustangs faltered as the public address system failed and the band suffered through heat and mishaps. The night included preacher prayers and a band member hospital visit, underscoring a string of misfortunes on the field.
In Snyder the crowd recalled Jerry Nixon at Friday night as he burst offside with speed similar to Ferrell Nixon. The elder Ferrell was known for the same moves twice per game, unsettling the opposing linemen and keeping the coach alert.
In Andrews Texas police chief and city manager were seen Thursday dusting a twisted stop sign for fingerprints. The note compares local quirks with a prior long request about a Marine seeking his wife and an inquiry concerning William L. Mannis reported as having died in Andrews on March 23 1959.
Snyder capitalized on a string of early and late fumbles by the Andrews Mustangs as a 62 yard drive culminated with a third quarter touchdown by Leslie Brown. Fullback Bob Pena and Brown supplied the yardage while the Mustang offense stalled through three quarters.
Army Begins Fund Drive reports Floyd Peacock as campaign chairman. The drive runs from September 25 with 160 volunteers seeking 3000 dollars for the local Salvation Army service unit which aided over 332 people last year. One third stays locally, two thirds to state HQ. 90 cents of every dollar funds welfare. Raymond Bristow chairs.
The fifth annual Gaines Andrews soil conservation district field day drew 22 Andrews residents and Seminole drivers to tours of an automatic feedlot on Dennis Nix ranch, mesquite control, irrigated farms near Seminole, a giant self propelled sprinkler system, and alfalfa plantings. Herschel L Hill named outstanding conservationist.
Monday is the last night for registration for high school adult night classes. Typing and bookkeeping meet evenings with a $200 cost shared among members. Ex-students of Andrews High plan homecoming activities at Nix Cafe, while a school board meeting led by Ham Hathcock and Yancey will be acted on by the group.
Supt T A Roach announces no United Fund efforts inside school buildings this year citing absence of county wide campaign. He notes schools collected about 10.6 percent of prior county contributions over 1955 to 1961 and says employees may be contacted at home for donations or campaign help.
Volunteer firemen were called to a burning car in front of the Kinney Hotel on North Main late Saturday afternoon. The elderly couple driving the car put out the blaze before firefighters arrived.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce retail committee launches a four week voting campaign to name the friendliest and most courteous woman and man employees in town. Votes award a $25 savings bond and a plaque. nominees are published in the paper and on the radio.
Funeral services were held yesterday for Jim Murry Flemins age 60 who died at 12 40 pm Friday in Permian General Hospital Rev James Tidwell officiating with Rev Carl Grissom assisting He owned the Beacon Motel and had lived in Andrews since 1951 A native of Bosque County he was an airplane enthusiast and charter member of the Mustang Flying Club Survivors include his wife Mabel four sisters and two brothers Arrangements were by Singleton Funeral Home
The seventh annual vocational nurse program starts October 5 at Permian Hospital in Andrews after three years at Odessa College. The 12 month course totals 450 classroom hours and 1575 clinical hours, preparing for Texas Vocational Nurses Board licensure. Applications open Monday. 30 applicants will be screened and 12 to 19 selected for the class, with aptitude testing by the Texas State Employment Commission in Odessa.
Gertrude Averyt, operator of a newcomer greeting service, was chosen as a director of the chamber of commerce to fill the unexpired term of LaDoyce Lambert. She chairs the local Blood Bank and co chaired the Highway 80 Tennis Tournament.
