Big Spring, 4A Steers, outplayed the Andrews Mustangs 26 to 12 on Friday night. Wayne Fields and Buddy Barnes powered 326 rushing yards while fullback and halfback led the attack. Andrews' Tommy Jackson Ray Ham and Ronnie Brice sparkled in a strong Mustang effort but ball control kept their offense in check.
Andrews defense stifled Big Spring as the Mustangs scored on two Brice passes to Carruth and Ham. Big Spring answered with a Fields two yard plunge and Loudermilk extra, but Andrews held for a 13 yard completion and 8 yard catch for scores amid 132 rushing yards.
A rash of worthless and forged checks led to three arrests. A 28 year old waitress jailed on charges of passing checks for 15 25 and 10 dollars was released after paying fines and debts. Reba King of Odessa was charged with forging checks and held in county jail. Billy R Brown 25 of Goldsmith faces forgery and passing charges in Andrews after similar allegations in Odessa with a 2500 dollar bond.
Police Chief G L Fox announced strict enforcement in school zones starting Monday with no warnings. Tickets will be issued for all violations as patrols increase. Fox urged residents to cooperate to reduce traffic around schools.
Special invitations sent to school county chamber of commerce and newspaper officials from 32 surrounding counties invite attendance at the dedication and open house Saturday September 21. The 8000 seat Mustang stadium will be dedicated at halftime during the Lake View San Angelo to Mustangs game. Open house runs 2 to 5 p m at new school buildings valued at 2 million including San Andres Underwood Devonian elementary buildings and the new administration and curriculum center. School buses will shuttle visitors among buildings.
Skelly Oil plans to set 5 3/4 inch casing and complete No. 1 A Frank Orson in central Andrews County near Andrews. The wildcat at 11 537 feet targets lower Pennsylvanian sand with initial test showing 85 barrels of oil in three hours and 10 barrels recovered after pump shut in. A Wolfcamp interval shows minor oil and gas while no water was produced.
A color film slide presentation from the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children in Kerrville will be shown at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the curriculum library of the school administration building. Mrs Sue Seaton former arts and crafts head at the camp will comment and answer questions. Admission is free.
Three residents suffered severe injuries this week. Jack E. Turner 21 of Odessa had three toes severed when a stand pipe fell on his foot on a J. E Barnes lease. John Copeland 66 of Archie's Lumber Co. lost index finger after an electric blade struck his hand in Northwest Andrews. Carl Betenbough mashed finger required amputation just below the nail after a car door closed on it. All were treated at Permian General Hospital.
In Odessa 70th District Court Judge Paul McCollum declared a mistrial in the J R Harkreader versus Bur Oden and Carruth Trucking Co case. The Palacios plaintiffs seek 155000 alleging Oden’s truck hit their car on June 25 1956. Trial resumes with jury report Tuesday. witnesses included Dr Keith Oehl lager and Ed Foster. Defense counsel W C Shafer and plaintiff’s attorney John Watts.
The city equalization board conducts hearings on residential and commercial property values for tax purposes. Residents received notices about convening for the year and the chance to present evidence before the board fixes and equalizes property values. Members include Luther Reynolds, Nola Fisher, and Bob Barnes with alternates J. R. Bills and Charlie Carruth.
