A tall man from Midland, once a five year veteran in the trade, ascended a flagpole while a crowd watched. After hours of struggle he slipped and dangled before finally being hauled to safety, his effort ending with a vow to return to work.
In a savagely fought season opener at Seminole, the Andrews Mustangs edged the Indians 12-8. Key plays included a 24 yard pass from Dou glass Jeffreys to Dudley Mitchell and a late third quarter sprint by Jeffreys for the go ahead score after R. E. Merritt’s 22 yard run set up the distance. Defensive fronts from Mitchell Anglin Camacho O Gwin Sandlin Worley Brown Parrish and Dooley steadied the surge while Jim Vining and Mike Smith anchored the Indians’ stops.
County Judge Virgil Lasater declared a mistrial in the case against Ted Ray Ivy after the jury failed to reach a verdict following deliberations from 6 p m to 10 30 p m. Ivy is charged with knifing Frank Bud Rohr Jr 17 son of Mr and Mrs Frank Rohr of 1105 NW 6th in November. The incident occurred at the Dairy Mart during a car dispute. Jury members were James Jones Gilbert Pennington Wayne Parker Willard Bell Glenn Weiser and Bill Sanders.
A jury panel for County court is summoned to appear at 9 30 a m Tuesday for three misdemeanor cases. Defendants include E E Taylor for assault on George Abee Buyr Ruthardt for assault on O A Nix and Roy D Rhodes for transporting in a dry territory. Six jurors will be selected from the summoned list.

The school announced two teacher workshop days for the first semester on September 25 and October 23. In service training will occur on these days as part of the 1959 60 calendar which lists 182 instructional days with up to five for workshops. Future holidays include Thanksgiving Christmas New Year and Easter with a March 4 convention day in Big Spring for teachers.
Texaco No. 20 H Parker wildcat flowed 184 barrels of oil with 2 percent sediment and water on an eight hour test from Ellenburger with perforations between 12 349 and 12 359 feet and a 24 64 inch choke. Plans call for three pay zones Devonian and Strawn with acid treatment and future completions nearby in Central Andrews County. Honolulu Oil No 1 P Parker completed as second well in Parker field with a 24 hour test producing 444 barrels of 40.6 gravity oil through a 5/16 inch choke after acid treatment.
Forrest Noble was appointed chairman of a steering committee to organize a Community Clinic in Andrews in November. John Stubbs and others appointed Frank Elkins and O. D. Huckabee to help, with Ralph Duncan of the West Texas Chamber leading clinic sessions. The event seeks resident input on projects to grow and prosper Andrews across multiple sectors.
An early Saturday fire at Pan American’s tank battery No. 1 on the University Consolidated IV base 15 miles west caused heavy damage to a 6 by 272 foot heater treater. The Andrews Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the blaze by 2 20 a m after using water to cool the vessel and chemical powder for final suppression. A Pan American official said the heater will need new gaskets gauges diaphragms thermostat and paint before it can operate again.
A cool air mass moved through Andrews county early Thursday bringing isolated showers and autumn like temps. Temperatures fell to the low 60s, a record low for the summer in the area. Andrews city saw only a trace of rain while the county's eastern part reported a sprinke Frankel City recorded three tenths of an inch, the largest rainfall in the county.
A car owned by W. D. Day of Andrews caught fire behind the administration building at 2 30 p m Friday. Fire department extinguished the blaze and prevented spread to nearby structures.
Andrews leads Seminole 12 to 8 as both sides trade drives. First downs favor Andrews 7 to 4 with 146 rushing yards and 86 rushing yards for Seminole. Passing totals show 75 yards on six attempts for the Seminoles and 14 attempts with seven completions for Andrews. Punting and penalties skew field position. Andrews records four punts for 166 yards and Seminole six for 209.
A night fire at the Western Market, 402 NE 1st, caused heavy damage to the building and contents. Fire crews arrived around 11:30 p m and fought the blaze for about forty minutes. Damages were estimated at 2300 dollars to the building and 4000 to contents. Refrigeration and meat stock suffered the most. cause undetermined. Owner-manager J W Hartline notes the store had been closed four days due to LeRoy Davis hospital stay in Lamesa.
Dale Houston, Andrews High School choir director, announces plans to form a boys choir for 30 to 40 auditionees. Auditions at 1 p.m. next Saturday at the community building. boys must bring a parent. Houston notes a Denton Texas Boys Choir lineage and past Florida appearances.
