New Juvenile Officer Named By Commissioners

Marshall Cooper a 26 year old Odessa native was hired Tuesday by county commissioners to assume county juvenile officer duties. He replaces Harold Biggs who resigned to attend Baylor University law school in Waco. Cooper has worked in juvenile settings since 1955 most recently at the Boys Ranch of West Texas in San Angelo where he directed counseling and caseloads for 40 to 60 boys. The ranch handled about 125 boys yearly. He is a 1953 Odessa High School graduate, attended Howard Payne and Odessa College, is married with two children and will begin Monday. County Judge Virgil Lasater said Cooper was highly recommended by Morris Craig of the Boys Ranch.

Quiet Labor Day Weekend Reports From Local Agencies

Law enforcement noted a quiet three day Labor Day period with two minor mishaps in town. In the 700 block of NE 4th Place Jack Williams backed into a parked car belonging to C. H. Ball, causing minor damage and earning a negligent collision citation. Labor Day saw a wagon driven by Delaine Dearen collide with James Ray Clark, with $350 and $150 damages respectively. Dearen cited for no drivers license and failure to yield.

West Texas rancher Hunter Irwin dies at 81

Hunter Irwin a longtime Andrews county rancher and early pioneer died at 11 50 a m Wednesday at his ranch home after a heart attack He was 81 and had lived in the county 56 years Irwin came to Andrews in 1904 from Oklahoma and helped found Shafter Lake post office He served as county commissioner from the 1920s to 1935 and was a prominent cattleman and dairyman with the cross brand on the left thigh dating to 1905

Youth Cases Down in County Juvenile Office Report

August activity at the county juvenile office was quiet with 13 cases handled by Juvenile Officer Harold Biggs, all adjusted by the probation officer and none requiring court action. Nine were white youths and four were Latin. cases included unlawful entry theft and running away, with two referrals from probation and eleven from law enforcement.

Country Club Board to Hear Progress on Building Plans

Committees drafting plans for a new country club building will report progress at a 7 30 p m board meeting. In the county courtroom the public may attend to hear committee reports per C V Campbell president of the country club.

Enrollment at Andrews schools shows slight rise

Enrollment after the first week reached 3,311 with net gains of 24 students despite seven losses. Elementary grades dropped one to 1,998, junior high rose to 560 from 549, and senior high climbed to 681 from 667. Negro students stayed at 72 with seven dropouts, supporting Supt. Roach's forecast of about 5,000 for the year.

Signs of Fall as Heat Relents in Local Week

Temperatures stayed under 90 degrees for seven of nine days with highs around 88 and early lows in the mid 60s. Cloudy skies persisted though no rain fell, according to Permian Basin Pipeline Co. readings covering August 31 to September 6.

Jubilee notes promote pageant events and town history

The Jubilee celebration builds with a Friday football game in Lubbock with the Brush and Jubilee Belles wearing period attire. Queen nominee Dessie Dame plans another Street Dance Saturday and Teddy Bears return to play. The Jubilee pageant, directed by Carl Hawley, will stage about 14 episodes tracing Andrews County from Comanche times to present day, with episodes like Texas Heritage and Early Americana.

Iron Lung Patient Flown In From Houston to Andrews

Sandra Waldron, a 17 year old polio patient from Houston, arrived in Andrews by air on a mercy mission. The J J Waldron family will host her as local services arrange schooling and home care while she continues recovery in an iron lung.

J. C. Howell named advertising manager at Andrews County News after six years at Levelland Daily Sun News. His career spans Shamrock, Wheeler Times, and Level land, with military service 1942-1946. He and his wife plan to move to Andrews. two daughters named Cheryl Kay and Cynthia Anne. Ed Payer remains on staff.
