A local farmer describes a roadside game where chickens line the road then dash in front of speeding cars. The last chicken across is humorously dubbed a high school student, creating a quirky rural anecdote.
Texas Senate seeks to tax beer with sales tax while the House resists. Beer under a $4.30 per barrel excise tax fuels opposition as counties and brewers defend the industry. Texas, dry by many counties, hosts 109 dry counties yet ranks high in breweries shipping beer to 30 states and D C, yielding about half a million dollars daily in revenue.
A patrolman stops a car on the new Turner Turnpike in Oklahoma and awards the driver $1,090 for being the mile stone driver. The man jokes about taking driving lessons and a license while his wife and father-in-law mock the situation, noting the car is stolen and they won’t get far.
An Andrews alumnus Jim Galloway now with Standard of New Jersey leads a Humble effort testing the Northwest Passage. The tanker Manhattan has been refitted as an icebreaker at a cost of about 40 million dollars and is to enter the pack between Baffin Island and Greenland to prove year round use of the route to reach Alaska’s North Slope.
The Andrews Medical and Surgical Clinic moved over the weekend to a new location west of Permian General Hospital. Physicians Dr. R. R. Ramsey Dr. Z. W. Hutcheson Dr. Bill Luper and Dr. Brian Gordon join their staffs as the hospital’s physical therapy wing nears completion within two weeks. A tour will be held for the contractor architects and Permian General Hospital board county commissioners, with open house to be scheduled later. The clinic retains its NW 1st St telephone number as part of a master plan to create a medical center in the area originally conceived by the Industrial Foundation.
Ray Roberts captured the championship flight with a 74 after an extra hole playoff against Tiny Mason. Brownie Brown won the first flight while H. C. Pella took second flight honors, J. O. Jones won third flight, 10m Cooper fourth, and Gib Jurenka fifth.
The first retail auction during Red Carpet days drew a crowd from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Andrews Court House square. Twenty four items donated by local merchants sold for certificates from participating shops. Auctioneer Neil McDonald of Texas Electric led the event. Items included flowers, golf shoes, stepping stools, lingerie, and more as the monthly swap fest joined Shopportunity Days.
Multiple minor crashes occurred in the city this holiday period. Barry Martin's 1969 car struck Glen Wheat's 1966 vehicle on Days Drive-In lot at 1 05 pm resulting in a citation for improper start. A fire call involved a car on 304 SW 7th extinguished by Andrews volunteers.
The first annual bicycle races for local youth will be held in Andrews on Sept 13. Events start with a safety clinic at 9 a.m. and races at 10 a.m. in age brackets from 7 to 16 plus. Trophies go to top two in each event. later prizes are bicycle accessories. Girls and boys may compete. no separate gender divisions. Entry forms are at Western Auto and White's. signed by parents. 50 cents per event.
A spaghetti supper will raise funds for the Andrews Boys Club at Glorieta Cafeteria on September 19 from 5 30 to 7 30 p m Tickets cost 1 for adults and 75 cents for children and may be purchased at the Boys Club weekdays 4 8 p m or Saturday daytime per club manager James Kirkpatrick.

The AAA Mustangs defeated AA Hamlin in a season opening scrimmage as Andrews led with seven scores and quarterback changes. John ny Horton was sidelined by a shoulder injury, to return after Friday’s game at 7 30 p m. Rodney Lunceford passed for a score to Mickey Finley while Amos Allen and two fullbacks added touchdowns. Hamlin managed one first down. the B team beat Snyder B 2 1. Andrews opens Sept 19 vs Lubbock Coronado.
Rain fell here Tuesday night totaling .32 inches per Andrews County Airport records. The wet spell began Aug 25 after a monthlong dry period with daily totals rising to .61 on Aug 26 and 1.05 in August overall, three inches below August 1968. North of town six miles recorded .41 inches while four miles southeast showed .2.
Mrs Patsy Dameron sustained a minor elbow cut and was taken to the hospital after her 1968 vehicle rolled onto its top on a curve west of Highway 385 south of Andrews. Patrolman Clint McCoy noted loss of control on the curve before the Labor Day weekend.
In Andrews over Labor Day weekend the Jaycees ran a rest stop at the former Mustang Drive In from Friday night to Monday midnight. The booth offered free refreshments and featured a wreck scene to warn motorists of potential disasters. Few motorists stopped, but workers say helping even a few to rest before long drives was worthwhile.
