Permian Fails To Score In Scrimmage With Mustangs

In Friday night scrimmage at Andrews the Mustangs held Permian Panthers to no scores while Andrews crossed the line twice. Ron Leach and Charlie George led scoring drives for Andrews, with Coy Watson returning a kickoff for a touchdowns and Lynn Taylor hospitalized with a head injury. First home game for the Mustangs is Friday at 8:30 p.m. against Snyder.

Sudden Stroke Fells Joe Culp

Joe Culp, 31, engineer with Dowell Chemicals, was found near his truck in a field Thursday after an apparent stroke. He was taken to Permian General Hospital where surgery was performed. friends started a fund at Commercial State Bank to aid the Culps.

Six Nominated for ASC County Committee

Six names submitted as nominees to serve on the ASC County committee with the top vote getter to be a member and two alternates named. Holdover members Leslie Emfinger two years and Ellison Tom Jr one year. Nominated on the ballot due September 25 are C. W. Calloway Gordon Cox Carl Gibson Ben Keith C. C. Short es and J. C. Turner.

Mustang Club Sets Meeting This Week

The Mustang Club will hold its first meeting of the year Tuesday night at 7 30 p m in the Junior High cafeteria. All members and prospective members are invited, according to Bert Griffith, club president.

Rain Drenches West Texas Totals Near An Inch

Steady rain Saturday brings rainfall totals to about one inch in West Texas with more showers possible. Temperatures cooled after cloudy Thursday and Friday, with August ending at 58 degrees. Northern Natural reported daily highs from 58 to 89 for the week as .25 inch fell in a Thursday morning shower.

Industrial Clinic to Feature Oscar Castillon in Andrews

A September 27 economic development clinic in Andrews will host top industry authorities including Oscar E. Castillon manager of the area development division of Texas Electric Service Company Fort Worth Castillon a Texas Christian University commerce graduate and Oklahoma University industrial development program alum has spent eleven years in Texas Electric Service Companys Fort Worth North Central and West Texas projects Castillon will join about nine other industrial authorities for the event hosted by local industry groups.

Edwin Brenholtz Named School Superintendent

Edwin A. Brenholtz former director of instruction for the Andrews schools was named superintendent by the school board in an executive session. He replaces Dr. R. A. Montgomery who moved to Abilene as regional director of the new education center. Brenholtz returned to Andrews after resigning to work on his doctorate at Texas Tech and begins duties after starting Friday. He began as a teacher in 1953 later serving as principal at San Andres Elementary and as director of instruction before his 1966 appointment. Ellison Tom, board president, said the decision was unanimous and Brenholtz would capably fill the post. Brenholtz has two children, David and Carol, a senior and sophomore at the high school.

Flames Damage Vacant House In Andrews

A Friday fire damaged a vacant residence at 406 NE 5th Street in Andrews. The blaze began in the carport and extended to the attic and interior without a determined cause. The Andrews volunteer fire department quickly extinguished the fire.

Youth Injured In Fall From House Roof

Larry Smith a 17 year old from Odessa was taken to Permian General after falling from the roof of a home under construction at 903 NW 13th around 8 15 a m Saturday. His injuries were not determined after an hour in the emergency room. The accident occurred as a shower began.

Flames Damage Grocery Building in Wednesday Night Fire

Modern Food suffered extensive damage in a fire that started near 9 30 p m in the back portion of the store. Firefighters battled the blaze over an hour with authorities diverting traffic.

New Chamber Manager Here in Andrews County

Preston Van Hawkins began duties as the new chamber manager for Andrews County and started meeting downtown chamber members. His first agenda item is a conference with an advance man assisting in planning the industrial conference set for September 27, with planning meeting slated Tuesday morning.

Principal Brodie Hutchinson and business instructor Mrs Grace Underwood announce night classes for typing shorthand and bookkeeping at the high school. Interested adults should report September 7 at 7 p.m. in the business department. Classes will run based on demand.
