Mrs Mary Carpenter is named news editor of the Andrews County News this week, formerly editor of the Pecos Independent where she earned multiple awards for photography and writing. Her career includes work at Corpus Christi Caller Times and Mercedes Enterprise, with teaching stints and honors from Texas A&I College and Who's Who in American Colleges.
The Downtown Lions Club luncheon featured Glenn Scott of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co presenting on future communication methods. Demonstrations showed talking machines and singing computers while a member heard his own voice through ear phones to study speech and conversation completion. Scott was introduced by Jack King of Andrews Telephone Company.
The Andrews County Sheriff's Posse led by Captain Butch Clinton and Sheriff Bud Gregory collected eight trophies in recent months at rodeo parades across Odessa Martin County Big Spring Monahans and Pecos. They earned first place with blue shirts and white chaps and added second and third place prizes at events in Odessa Eunice N M San Angelo and Brownfield. A special invitation to participate in the Southeastern New Mexico State Fair in Roswell was extended, with the parade marshal urging regional representation. The group also sponsors the Junior Rodeo and a July barbecue, meeting each second Monday to plan activities. Officers include Captain Clinton Trail Boss Forbes Lieutenant Echols and others. auxiliary president is Mrs Cecil Waggoner.
The Andrews Independent School District board endorsed a 600000 dollar bond plan to fund academic classroom additions at the high school, a vocational building, air conditioning, and other improvements. Voters will decide September 23 with polling at the administration building and Frankel City Baptist Church.
Enrollment in the Andrews schools rose by 37 students from last year with a 3 270 second day total. The high school reached a record 962, up from 921, while the junior high stood at 556 and San Andres at 448.
Andrews and Texas voters head to the polls on Tuesday September 7 for a special constitutional amendment election to decide a redistricting bill. The measure would increase the State Senate from 31 to 39 seats and affect the 7th senatorial district including Andrews and surrounding counties. Absentee voting is available through Friday September 3.
City and county offices close Monday with courthouse closed through Tuesday for a special election. Polling places run 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday. post office follows holiday mail with 1 pm pickup, no home delivery. Banks and savings institutions observe holiday. sheriff, police, and highway patrol stay on 24 hour duty to enforce traffic safety.
Thirteen year old Robert Campbell Lively, son of Mr and Mrs Skipper Lively, won the Vandalia Grand National trap shooting finals in Dayton Ohio by scoring 95 of 100 at 19 yards to tie with three adults and then 47 of 50 at 21 yards to claim the championship He was named National Sub Junior Champion after earlier 96 of 100 in Junior Handicap and 99 of 100 in zone Amarillo events He and his parents reside at 309 NW 3rd and he is a member of the Andrews Trap Club.
Charles D. Walker of Midland is named county juvenile counselor effective tomorrow. A 34 year old with eight years in law enforcement, he has worked with the Department of Public Safety and Midland Police Department, and studied at Vanderbuilt University. He earns 500 dollars monthly.
