A former Andrews junior high teacher now in Seward Alaska notes lower taxes there but higher utilities. He cites outdoor rewards and sunsets while recalling a Detroit man’s appeal against income tax inequities that penalize married couples.
Andrews County eyes a record agricultural income with total county production around 3.5 million dollars. Cotton is boosted by about 9,500 acres, the largest crop yet, while grain rises to about 10,000 acres. Nix Farm, west of Andrews, leads with roughly 4,000 acres of cotton farming.
Andrews residents vote 905 to 441 in favor of a 2 million dollar school bond to fund a new middle school and related projects including an all weather track and floor updates. turnout exceeds expectations with strong participation from property and non property owners and a 30 day contest period before sale.
The Andrews Christmas Parade will start at 4 30 p m Friday December 1 with Santa opening Fantasyland at 113 NW Avenue A. Entry is free with prizes of 50 25 and 10. Deadline is Wednesday November 29. Jerry Hotchkin is marshal and Girl Scouts Sara Jordan organize Fantasyland decorations.
The Mustangs opened the season with a 68-27 victory at Slaton. Ronny Pearson led with 19 points, Jim Leach added 15 as coach Edd Farmer praised a high pressure defense and conditioning. The next game is against Sweetwater on Friday.
Lowell Longley, Andrews County Chamber of Commerce manager, was elected president of the Permian Basin Chamber of Commerce Managers in Odessa. He aims to advance tax programs during a six month term and to strengthen ties with the Better Business Bureau and New Mexico chambers.
Andrews High School topped the annual math tournament with 970 points overall. In the veteran number sense, Dale Hayes won with 285 points while Angela Reece and John Turnage placed second and third. New veterans from Wall and Lakeview followed, and in the novice division Mike Black claimed first with 155 points. The event featured 17 high school teams and 12 freshman squads across multiple schools.
