The crew reports a challenging flight from Dallas to Midland Tuesday night hindered by a 200 foot ceiling. After circling Odessa, Andrews, and Midland for about 30 minutes, they returned to Dallas for an overnight stay and a successful retry the next morning.
Bertha O Keefe a four special education teacher at Andrews Elementary was named Andrews Teacher of the Year by the Andrews Classroom Teachers Association She advances to the Texas Teacher of the Year contest with state winners entering the national level O Keefe was chosen from seven nominees including Bill Goolsby Miss Madge Conger and Howard McLaughlin She has 21 years teaching in Guam Japan Germany and other locales and travels widely in Europe Asia and the Holy Land She is active in several education groups and church and plans to continue helping less fortunate children.
Two Andrews County youths will receive the Gold Star Award for outstanding 4 H Club work at the annual 4 H Awards Program Saturday at 7 pm in the Community Building. James Roberts editor of the Andrews County News will be featured speaker.
Dr. William H. Beierwaltes of the University of Michigan will address members of the Andrews Odessa and Midland Medical Society at 7 30 pm Thursday in the home area of the high school His talk is titled Nuclear Medicine in the Daily Practice of Medicine.
Andrews Mustangs aim for a perfect 6-0 2-AAA conference record as they close regular season with Ector. The Eagles, led by Eddie Dominguez and Zeke Sanchez, will push to derail the Mustangs in a pivotal district tilt after a string of wins and losses. Coach Glenn Frazier, recently released from hospital, returns as the team awaits healthy players beyond Bert Griffith.
Auditions Saturday for Andrews first hootnanny sponsored by the National Thespian Society and Mustang Stage Band. The event begins 5 pm November 30 in the old high school auditorium with local talent and audience participation. Three judges meet at 2 pm and 7 pm to select acts.
National Thespian Society presents Charley's Aunt by Brandon Thomas in a Merry Old England setting at a boys' school. John Hogue directs with polishing under way for opening night on December 5 6 and 7 at the Little Theatre.
The Andrews Mustangs and the Dumas Demons prepare for a bi district playoff at Jones Stadium in Lubbock on Thanksgiving Day at 2 pm. Andrews seeks its first playoff bid since 1959 and Dumas aims for a third straight AAAA berth. The Demons ride a 21 game win streak as last year’s quarterfinals drew 10 000 fans.
The C. W. Brown Pipe and Supply company launches in Andrews with an open house and barbecue from four to six Saturday on the Kermit highway. The firm sells oil field supplies and pipe and has branches in McCamey and Crane. Owner C. W. Brown, a state official and Democratic Party leader, also runs Brown & Thorpin in McCamey and helped discover the oil field in Pecos County. Bonnie Beard will manage the Crane area joint venture along with Davie Hudson joining the firm here.
Several firms announce extended hours to start Christmas shopping early. Shoppers can use layaway and pay by Christmas. Special prices run 6 to 9 pm with discounts and occasional prizes. Advertisers include Dunlap's Ben Franklin Wacker's Ben's Style Shop Montgomery Ward Sears Western Auto Little Shop and Anthonys.
A 311 member Charter board was named Tuesday night to lead the local Boys Club. Officers include Voyle Combs president and Charlie bis hop first vice president, with Sam my Williams as second vice president and John Neely secretary. Jerry Criner is treasurer. The board includes Roy V. Bennett, Bill Badgett, B. H. Wilke, Love Cure, and many others. A finance committee was named with Bill Rowlett as chairman. The group signed a lease with Andrews school for use of the old high school gym, aiming to start operations by January 1.
Everett P Dobbs filed a suit in 109th district court seeking a permanent injunction against enforcement of the school dress policy. Defendants include the Andrews County School Board of Trustees Supt T A Roach and Giorieta Principal Lowell McGee. No temporary order issued. case will proceed next term in January. The suit stems from a three month dispute over dress rules for all students and alleges discrimination against Dobbs daughter for wearing corduroy trousers.
Clyde Construction Company of Odessa started a curb and gutter drainage project on NW Avenue 1 to Bulane Route. The system handles runoff from a high school lot and diverts water west of Mustang Stadium toward a future 30 acre park with lake and boating facilities. City county and school negotiations aim for a near term completion.
Henry Lee Williams, 26, was arrested by Sheriff Paul Cumbie and Deputies Carl Vickers and Mark Benton Sunday on a nighttime burglary charge. He is held on 1500 bond. Williams allegedly broke into Willard Niederhofer's home at 709 NE 4th Place Saturday night, stole clothes and a stereo, and set a small fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze as officers traced footprints to Williams's residence where he surrendered.
Frank Crown addressed about 70 scouts and leaders from Andrews Winkler and Ward counties in the Sandhills District Boy Scouts recognition banquet. Andrews Troop 258 was named outstanding troop for the district as medals were awarded.
