In Andrews and across Texas, confusion grows over a new common law marriage change for minors. State Bar wheelchair official Orba Low Malone of El Paso says the law does not allow minors to marry without proof and that recording marriages aims to preserve evidence for legitimacy and benefits.
The United Fund reached 518 995 Tuesday just under 1000 from a 19 834 goal. Campaign chair Lloyd Stoebner praised Charlie Carruth for obtaining over 75 percent of the target and leading a door to door effort. Season basketball tickets are on sale at the tax collector's office in the school administration building and cover all home games and the Andrews tournament. Andrews Mustangs end 1969 season in Fort Stockton Friday at 8 p.m. It is the 13th meeting between the schools with 138 seniors playing their last game. Andrews seeks a win to force a three team tie for second through fourth as Monahans Pecos and Kermit Seminole chase the crown.
The Permian Basin Girl Scout fall banquet and council meeting will be held at Andrews High School. Mrs. R. C. Slack will preside over the business session starting 4 p.m. Delegates and officers from across the region will attend, with about 200 people expected to join the 7 p.m. banquet in the high school cafeteria featuring seniors and Patsy Thrasher.
Vandals broke into the Andrews Goodfellows Room early Monday stealing toys and pouring milk across the room. Mrs. Darrell Sisco and Mrs. G. W. Albritton found the scene Tuesday while unloading the clothing box. officer Doug Gaines investigated, noting a broken west window as entry.
Dennis Snyder son of Mrs. Eddie Lee Jones of Andrews returned Saturday from Viet Nam service. The specialist four served one year and two days in the battle area and was discharged Nov. 15. He earned the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal along with the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal as a radio and teletype operator in the 501st Signal Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division.
George C. Taylor of S11 NW 4th was hospitalized with minor cuts after his pickup struck Charles Key Carruth of Andrews at NW 10th and Ave F. Carruth was cited for failure to control speed.
Citizens united under patriotic declarations move door to door as Girl Scouts Boy Scouts and Boys Club canvass the city. Plan for impromptu rally possibly billboard support slogans urging God country and government. An old fashioned patriotic rally to be announced soon after a town hall meeting last week.
Scotty Scott Jr. is taken to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas for more tests and surgery on injuries from his Vietnam service. He is accompanied by his mother.
