A Texas column urges readers to vote on a school bond amid the Rodriguez Supreme Court case. It argues poorer districts receive inferior education and may force widespread funding across districts, hitting oil-rich West Texas.
The article argues the county should back a school bond Tuesday to close a gap in facilities, noting progress in elementary and high school campuses but aging junior high infrastructure. It cites a shift to individualized, career oriented education and learning centers, which current junior highs cannot easily accommodate.
The town of Andrews debates a four part series on a proposed 2 million school bond set for Tuesday November 21. The plan adds 300000 for expanded vocational space at the high school and envisions extending vocational training into junior high with new workshops and programs.
Andrews County voters will go to the polls Tuesday to decide on 2 million in bonds for a new middle school. Polls open 7 a.m. to noon and close at 7 p.m. Balloting occurs in the administration building board room with separate boxes for property owners and non owners.
Andrews businesses will largely close Thursday for Thanksgiving per Lowell Longley of the Andrews County Chamber of Commerce. Banks, the post office, courthouse and city offices will also close for Turkey Day.
A Quay County jury found Mark Grissom innocent of the 1972 murder of his son Preston Warren Grissom after two hours of deliberation. The defense argued the shooting at the Grissom truck stop near Nara Visa was accidental during horseplay. The trial, held in Tucumcari, drew many Andrews residents as witnesses or supporters.
Andrews High School season tickets go on sale Monday at the school tax office. Tax assessor collector Dave Robinson said buyers include option holders, with a few tickets remaining. The Mustangs open the season Tuesday night in Slaton against the Slaton Tigers.
The Andrews Ministerial Alliance sponsors a 7 pm citywide Thanksgiving service at Second Baptist Church. The Rev. Billy Wilkinson of Means Memorial United Methodist Church delivers the message as ministers from participating churches lead parts of the program. Offertory goes to Satellite School for retarded children. about one hour of hymns prayers and music.
After a 15 minute session the 2 A A district committee concluded three Andrews varsity basketball players did not violate UIL rules on post season play in non school games. The decision cited a 1969 UIL letter allowing participation in summer recreation programs. The panel delayed action on Odessa Ector pending state executive committee investigation of a Nov 10 football incident.
