School board backs annual three day trip for top students

The board votes to amend a two year old policy allowing three school days off for top band and choir students to attend a Corpus Christi Festival. Officials say trips boost student self esteem and prevent four year diplomas without a trip, urging May rounds for students with no trip.

A group of high school civics students toured city county chamber and hospital offices on Tuesday. The seven hour visit revealed the workload of local government and impressed chamber officers and teacher Keith Harding. The paper hopes the visit becomes an annual event.

Monahans Visit Sparks Hard-Fought Lobos Mustang Rivalry

In Monahans the Lobos face the Mustangs in a heated historic rivalry. Andrews has won 1 of 15 meetings over 15 years while Monahans last beat them in 1960. Lobos seek a season turning upset with a tough Friday night test.

Hospital Reports Slight October Profit at Permian General

Permian General Hospital posted a net profit of 3591 for October after a prior deficit. The report shows 275 patients occupying 1511 days, an average daily census of 47, with 6 surgical patients and 27 major surgeries. Twenty four infants were born, and 163 medical patients plus other categories are recorded.

Board Amends Trip Policy For Annual Band and Choir Trip

The school board voted unanimously to amend policy allowing annual May trips for the choir directed by Dale Houston and the band directed by Bill Green to attend the Buccaneer Music Festival in Corpus Christi. Students would miss three school days, and each group would pay its own expenses.

First Census Round Concludes in Andrews Citywide Survey

Over 100 people completed the first round of the church membership census by the Andrews Ministerial Alliance last Sunday. A final survey is planned for this Sunday with packets available at 2:00 PM. An orientation session led by Kenneth Sutton follows at 2:30 PM. last week’s workers may skip it. Approximately 40 percent of residents including McKinney Acres and Ruskin Road were visited, with one in seven families not contactable and requiring followups. A nursery will be provided for parents assisting with the census.

Mustangs Set To Clinch Title With Lobos Clash

The Andrews Mustangs head into a Friday night date with the Monahans Lobos aiming to wrap up the District 2AAA crown. Andrews holds a four game district win streak and needs one more victory in its final two games, while Monahans sits third with two wins, one loss and one tie. The Lobos rely on a fast backfield led by Wayne McPeak Randy Jackson and Gary Wingo, and have produced solid aerial yardage.

Commissioners Seek Bids for New County Vehicles and Road Work

County commissioners on Monday voted to seek bids on a new car for the County Juvenile Officer, a water truck for the road maintenance department, and a water tank. In other business, the court approved opening three miles of county road with fences in the Shafter Lake area, connecting to an existing road.

Andrews County Voters Approve Welfare Amendment

In an Amendment Election, Andrews County voters rejected three amendments and approved one. A total of 426 ballots were cast with 230 for the welfare amendment and 189 against. The poll tax repeal failed 288 to 138, Jefferson county retirement amendment 267 to 124, and veterans land program 288 to 181.

Teachers Named For Annual Award

Seven outstanding teachers were nominated for the Andrews Teacher of the Year award by the Andrews Classroom Teachers Association. Faculty ballots determined the local winner who advances to the state contest and then to national competition under the National Education Association. The high school candidate isill Goolsby, a diverse educator with degrees from Ohio State, Texas Tech, and East Texas State College.

Stores Stay Open Late For Christmas Shopping in Andrews

Ten local firms will keep doors open until 8 pm tonight and next Thursday November 21 to boost holiday purchases. Extra specials run from 6 to 9 pm with gifts and prizes for shoppers. Participants include Wackers, Ben Franklin, Hight's Western Auto, Ben's Lie Shop, White Auto Store, Singleton's, Anthony's, Sears and Dunlap's.

Four Directors To Be Elected By Chamber

A nominating committee has selected eight candidates for four vacancies on the Andrews County Chamber of Commerce board. Ballots list the nominees including James Tienes, Genevieve Leach, Claude Mitchell, Harold McCullough, and others. Ballots will be counted November 29, 1963, at the chamber office.

Fire Strikes Rare Plant at Pure Oil Company Plant

Fire damaged the Pure Oil Company plant near Andrews, Wyoming, Tuesday morning when an oil heater failed and ignited a processing section. About two hours of firefighting with Dowell Inc equipment contained the blaze. no injuries were reported. The plant will be shut for repairs and resume operation after fixes.
