A high school football thriller saw the Monahans Mustangs edge the Andrews Lobos in a near flawless 48 minute effort with no fumbles interceptions or penalties. The game matched two ready teams as officials praised Monahans for a flawless display amid a strong Lobos challenge.
The Permian Basin Girl Scout drive presents an all day fundraising event Monday with a 9 to 5 schedule. Local leaders Lloyd Sloediki Bil Sanders and Raymond Sharoud head the effort to raise 4539.64 for Andrews area. The council serves 7000 girls and 1500 adults across 16 counties with camps at Mitre Peak and Hat-A Ranch plus troop camping gear and year round activities.
The City of Andrews will send twelve delegates to the Texas Municipal League meeting in Fort Worth this week. Delegates include Mayor and Mrs. Jimmy Wilkins, City Manager and Mrs. Herb Litz, Police Chief and Mrs. James Clark, and councilmen with their wives Mr. and Mrs. Doug Gilliland, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Demmler, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dotson.
Local merchants stress layaway as Christmas approaches with about 35 shopping days left. A special advertisement highlights layaway offers for Andrews shoppers to avoid last minute crowding.
United States Senator George Mahon will visit Andrews Friday between 6 and p.m. to hear constituent views in a pulse meeting. The exact venue will be announced. He aims to learn local problems and needs and gauge preferred government actions.
Arthur Caskey 64 of Crane died about 9:30 a.m. while birds were being hunted in a pasture west of Andrews. He hunted with Homer Tayler and Billy Ray Phillips near the Kermit highway. He died en route to hospital. justice of the peace ruled death by natural causes. Services were pending at Singleton Funeral Home.
The annual Rotary Chili Supper is planned for Tuesday night at the Community Building. Tickets cost 75 cents and include chili beans pie and drink. Tickets are sold by Rotary Club members and at the door, per president Gerald McCaskill.
Andrews officials and convention committee seek a bid to host a playoff game at Seagraves with plans to engage other schools. The group also outlined a yearlong work program including placemats for highway towns, recruiting six and eight man football coaches, recreation and beautification projects, and support for district track hosted by Seminole. Attendees included Lowell McGee and others.
Sheriff J. A. Bud Gregory attended the Texas South Plains and Eastern New Mexico Peace Officers Association meeting in Carlsbad New Mexico. Attendees included sheriffs police chiefs and law officials from the Plains area and adjacent regions. Gregory was the sole Andrews county delegate.
In a near perfect game at Mustang Stadium the Monahans Lobos defeated the Andrews Mustangs 16 to 13 in a key district clash. Monahans built a 16 point lead with a field goal and two touchdowns as Andrews fumbled twice and had penalties, while Bobby Smith sparked a 90 yard kickoff return that kept the Mustangs alive.
The National Labor Relations Board announced results from four yard elections in Andrews Seminole Levelland and Lovington N M where Permian and D J Service Co Inc voted 23 to 11 against the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers AFL CIO union A void ballot existed with one employee voting both ways Two ballots were challenged by the company and one by the union but none altered the outcome This marks a second failed union vote this fall per company owner E H Doc Wilkins.
City Council met Thursday night with Mayor Jimmy Wilkins presiding. L. E. Hennigan reported on federal programs and low rent housing for the aged. A plumbing board was formed with new members. Zoning and traffic reports were discussed. prairie dog town action tabled. a convention project discussed. policy changes included higher mileage reimbursement and fiscal examination for new workers.
Devonian Elementary and the remodeled Hamilton Field dressing rooms open to the public this afternoon during education week. School board members and administrators invite the community to visit between 1 and 4 p.m.
The county court approved the official vote canvass on Wednesday morning recording 1,884 total votes. Officials ordered the vote distribution by party on the court minutes and declared the party with the most votes in each office the winner. Commissioners set pay for general election workers at $1.25 per hour and $5 extra for the election judge.
Four emergencies were recorded this week at Permiar General Hospital’s emergency room in a light week. J. W. Arnold received treatment for eye flash burns. Troy Goodwin of 706 SW 11th was treated for an electrical flash burn to hands and face. Robert Smith of 809 NE 4th was treated for a possible fracture and laceration to the little finger of the right hand. Tommy Rehders of 902 NW 13th was checked for a possible back injury.
Permian General Hospital reported a cash deficit of 2725.37 for last month with receipts 46556.46 and expenses 49281.93. On an accrual basis losses neared 8000. Ninety five treated, including newborns totalling 295. births 25 and deaths two. Everett Solomon presented the administrator update as Roy Sparks led the board in approving bills.
