An Andrews editorial decries the state’s negative voting method, noting 467 of 3,152 ballots in Andrews county failed to count in the governor race. It urges circling as a positive mark and calls for legislative change to simplify balloting for all Texans.
The Tri County Medical Society and Andrews Jaycees launch a mass Sabin polio vaccination effort called Victory over Polio. Clinics at Underwood Devonian and Glorietta schools offer Type I vaccine with a 25 cent optional donation and a fast four minute process.
Woodrow Wilson York 48 was killed when a tractor boom fell during pipe loading for Phillips Petroleum in Loving County Texas. He was a pipefitter with Phillips out of Odessa after ten years in Andrews. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church with honorary pallbearers from Phillips. Survivors include wife Naomi a daughter and three sisters and three brothers. Services were by Singleton's Funeral Home. The seminar on industrial development is announced for Tuesday November 13 in the old high school auditorium with Harry W Clark and W B Fleck as speakers. Tickets are $2 and open to the public.
City county and school officials approved 3 706 toward a 20 513 80 summer recreation budget. A majority opposed charging participant fees. A committee led by Harold Cox will plan activities including track tennis golf arts and crafts swimming theatre ballet and tree play. Frank Stickney urged a paid civil defense head to run the Andrews program citing shelter limits and public education as key needs.
Voters approved amendments No. 2 No. 4 and No. 7 while defeating others in a long delayed Devonian Precinct two count. Complete returns show governor Cox and Connally results along with statewide and local races and write ins.
A house to house canvass for Girl Scout funds runs Tuesday until 7 p.m. in Andrews. Volunteers target the $1500 quota for next year’s scout work. Mrs. O B Raburn leads the drive urging residents to contribute to support over 300 troop members and 70 adult leaders.
Andrews elementary senior high and junior high schools host open houses to celebrate American Education Week. Parents and friends are invited to visit from 7 to 9 p.m. with exhibits of students’ work under the theme Education Meets the Challenge of Change.
Pecos dominated Andrews 16 to 0 as Ricky Bennett led a powerful offense and stout defense. Bennett accounted for most yardage, with McLain Mendanich Poole Hooker and Adams sharing rushing duties. Pecos rushed 120 yards while Andrews totaled 101. A 63 yard Bennett run set the tone in the first quarter.
The National Thespians present Teahouse of the August Moon in a three act High School Little Theater run directed by John Hogue. Performances begin 5 p.m. Tuesday Thursday and Saturday with Jerry Shira as Sakini and Tack Slayton as Col. Purdy plus Douglas Pike as Sgt Greg Lee.
