A country editor previews several college football games with bold picks. Andrews faces Seminole with home-field edge and possible ineligibility and illness. Odessa bets on Sweetwater. Midland hosts Lamesa. S M U battles A M with Aggies favored. Texas meets Baylor with Baylor’s line strength highlighted.
The Colts of the Mustangs Corral schedule two matches with Seminole. The first game will be at Seminole on November 17 and a return game is planned at home on November 23.
A new tennis court was added at the school to accommodate growing interest in the sport. Rankings will soon close for the girls, and after ranking each student may challenge the one above her every two weeks to improve her standing. Mr and Mrs Pat Beene were Lubbock visitors Monday. Mr and Mrs Henry Heath shopped in Odessa Monday.
A majority of Andrews business houses will close Saturday after noon to honor Armistice Day while most others stay open until Saturday noon. Shoppers are urged to buy Friday afternoon and Saturday morning to give the boys a half holiday without inconvenience.
The County Board of Education met Tuesday with members including President Mrs. C. E. Sealy and Mrs. Sam M. Smith. A committee of Mrs. Smith and C. W. Roberts was appointed to meet the Commissioners Court to investigate the possibilities of a County Library.
In a wild Friday clash the Stanton Buffalos edged the Mustangs 18 to 13. Smith and Dillard connected for a Mustang TD while Andrews sparked Stanton with a 65 yard scoring run and a late turnover sealed the win. Costly Mustang fumbles doomed their effort.
Four steel runners totaling twenty six tons are moved into place for the court house front and arch. Contractor Blackmore said progress matches the schedule and the building should finish on time in March. Concrete forms for the third story are under construction, with the third floor to house the jury rooms and district court offices.
Mack Farmer and Ham Pinnell discuss hunting fever with conversations about a gun and a place. They find more happiness in the pursuit than in possession, reflecting the old proverb in a light tone.
The Big Spring B Team Steers will host the Andrews Mustangs on November 18 at the local field. T. K. Price announced the schedule on Thursday, calling it one of the outstanding games to be played locally.
At a county Democratic Executive Committee meeting J. S. Montgomery was chosen County Chairman succeeding G. P. Beane. The committee now includes Montgomery as Chair, C. E. Sealy as Secretary, with W. L. Blair R. A. Moxley and Guy McGill as members.
Teachers and trustees wives and husbands met Tuesday night for the regular P. T. A. social. An Armistice decoration theme extended to bread in the sandwiches as eight tables played progressive Cootie and Bunk games before a game with the ring ended.
The Baptist Workers of the Lamesa Association met in Andrews on Thursday with delegates from many churches. The conference centered on Stewardship with talks by laymen and ministers. Rev. Cumby preached on Stewardship and Rev. O C Curtis spoke on Gods Pleasure in Financing his Kingdom. Luncheon was provided by the Ladies of the W M A. Dr H D Bruce of Midland led the afternoon program.
A group of women met at Mrs. C. E. Sealy's home Wednesday to form a sewing club not yet named. Officers elected include President Mrs. Virgil Brooks Vice President Mrs. J H Welch and Secretary Mrs. J Lee Smith. Members listed enjoyed punch and cookies after sewing.
In Hudspeth County Texas a herd of five antelope chased two coyotes for miles observed by state game warden with Bob Ingram of El Paso. The antelope pursued the coyotes over ridges then paused and fled as the animals vanished in different directions. Sam M. Smith, county clerk, visiting Martin Texas for health, with hostesses Mrs. J. Lee Smith Mrs. Rufus Walker and Mrs. T. D. Hamilton shared the excitement.
A human skull discovered by the Phillips Core Drill Crew on Ratliff Ranch in southwest Andrews County is being studied at Texas Tech. Dr. J G Little suggests it may belong to a prehistoric woman, with teeth wear indicating tobacco use or traditional herb diet. A prior missing-woman case from the county is noted but no link is confirmed.
C E Sealy chairs a county wide drive starting Monday November 5 to recruit American Red Cross members in Andrews. Six solicitors form two teams led by captains Mrs Bill Blair and Mrs T K Price with assistants, while regional leaders oversee Florey Humble Camp and county relief efforts. All funds stay locally with a small portion to National Headquarters.
Andrews Mustangs face Seminole Indians Friday afternoon at Seminole in a hard fought season game. Seminole has won most previous meetings, but Andrews shows steady improvement and is predicted to push for a close victory with a large local turnout.
Rev. G H Bryant pastor of the Andrews Methodist Church will leave next Tuesday to attend the Methodist District Conference at Lubbock. During his two years in Andrews the church membership nearly doubled and a new educational building was added. He has been active in civic affairs and a leader in the city’s religious and intellectual life.
Andrews School Board president H. T. Wilson shared his army journey from recruit to the Armistice signing to an audience of students and faculty. He recalled training camp, crossing the Atlantic on a troop ship, and serving on the front in France. Freshman class members presented a playlet titled The Ghost Walks Fast directed by Lydia Kelly with Ellison Tom Jr. and others in the cast.
Mr and Mrs Dick Dillard visited Stanford Dillard in Grandfalls on Wednesday, according to local notes. The brief social call highlighted family ties and community activity.
Cowden and Evans acquire an additional 45 sections of land in Andrews and Lea counties near the Coven and Evans outfit. The move expands their grazing to 90 sections. Clarence Cowden moves 700 head to the T-Bar ranch in the Jar area. The partners buy 350 cows from Ratliff Bedford and Foy Proctor for the new range.
Reports indicate an intensive oil drilling campaign will begin in Andrews County with major companies and independents planning locations. Activity has increased in many areas and Ector County reports a new 900m drilling project with 25 to 30 rigs near Odessa, as war and embargo easing are expected to raise oil activity.
