Open house set today through Saturday in Andrews schools in observance of American Education Week. Mayor Duncan proclaims the week. Fire Damages House on NW 9th and Car on 9th

A Friday morning blaze at 609 NW 9th caused about $1,000 in damage to O. L. Davis's house with heavy smoke and closet contents burned. Two volunteer units responded at 5:45 a.m. A second fire at 406 NW 9th damaged P. B. Grissom's car with about $250 loss. origin unknown.

Government Day Set For Thursday At Andrews High School

Andrews High School seniors participate in the second annual Youth Government Day on Thursday. About 170 civic students will shadow county and city offices and some state roles, with two or three per office in places. A mythical city council meeting caps the afternoon activities.

Santa to visit Andrews for 1964 Christmas kickoff

Santa Claus arrives at 5 30 p m November 30 on the Andrews courthouse square to light the city and take Christmas orders. The Yale lights go on around 6 p m and a huge tree will be decorated by the county and city. Merchants urged to join operation lightup with a lighting contest and a residential contest sponsored by a civic group. Lights sold by Andrews Boys Club at 30 cents a foot. A community singout and multiple choral performances planned on the square. Churches participate to boost Christmas celebrations in Andrews.

Andrews Volume Placed At UT

A volume on Andrews County has been placed in the Library of the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Texas. The complete set of 41 community surveys for cities served by Texas Electric Service Company has also been added to the library to aid site selection for plants and business ventures. The Andrews survey covers resources transport highways employment and related data for industrial analysis.

Women Hurt In Mishap at East Broadway Intersection

Mrs Jaanita Gray of 910 NE 7th suffered neck back and shoulder injuries and a finger injury after a three vehicle crash at 9 20 a m Wednesday at East Broadway and 1st. She was taken to Permian General Hospital in satisfactory condition. The other driver Marvin Owens of Hobbs and Henry McReath of 1110 Crescent Dr were involved. McReath received citations for improper lane usage and negligent collision. Wreck reported on page 5.

Two Write-In Votes Prompt County Office Dispute

William Bert Smith received two write-in votes for County Animal and Hide Inspector after ballots listed his name though the office was not on the official ballot. Commissioners canvassed and approved the election, then added the two votes after Smith pointed out the error. He argues the Texas Constitution requires the office and urges Andrews County to follow it.

Final Week Under Way in Andrews Boys Club Fund Drive

The Andrews Boys Club Inc raises funds with a target of 14 650 as 60 plus workers canvas downtown and residential areas. Campaign runs 6 to 8 p m on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday nights with efforts continuing until the goal is met. Charlie Bishop leads the drive and members join workers. out of town contributions total 1200 dollars.

Shell Oil recompletes Wolfcamp Devonian well near Andrews

Shell Oil Co. reentered No. 11 Ratliff Bedford in the Bedford field 25 miles southwest of Andrews and recompleted it as a Wolfcamp discovery. Perforations at 7,802 to 7,022 feet produced 169 barrels of 39 gravity oil with a gas oil ratio of 134 to 1 and 20 percent water after a 1,700 gallon acid treatment.

Correction on Youth Theft Report and Apology

The paper corrects an earlier theft arrest report by noting John D. Berger Jr. was misidentified as a youth. The editors apologize for the error which confused him with the 13 year old son of Mr and Mrs John D Berger Sr of 1000 NW Ist Place.

Rites Pending For Local Man Virgil Mahaffey

Funeral services are pending for Virgil Louis Mahaffey 65 a long time Andrews resident who died at his home Saturday afternoon. He was born July 7 1899 in Clarksville Texas and survived by his wife Dora a daughter Wanda Ellsthorpe a sister Dora Patterson and two grandchildren Singleton's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
