An emu? no a loon, nicknamed sailor of the Northern Lakes, was found stranded in Means Field Andrews area after a failed takeoff attempt. DS R Construction's Elby Choate kept the bird at home then moved it to a caliche pit pond hoping it might find a way to Lake Thomas. The loon cannot run on land, needs a long water run to launch, and may not have the space to rise again.

Road bonds total 648 000 including 241 000 for the by pass extension 55 000 for connecting roads and 352 000 for paving county roads. Park improvements total 75 000 with 25 000 for a swimming pool addition and 20 000 for two Little League parks plus 20 000 for rodeo grounds. Hospital site 10 000 is slated. Airport extensions total 41 000 with the full airport program estimated at 82 000 funded equally with Civil Aeronautics Authority support.
In Central Andrews County at Honolulu Oil Corp No 5 Parker, the fifth pay zone in the Bakke field flowed 56.2 barrels per hour in a drillstem test at 7,560 to 7,635 feet in the middle Clear Fork. Other proven pays include Wolfcamp Pennsylvanian Devonian and Ellenburger with possible shows in Glorieta and lower Pennsylvanian. The well lies 660 feet from north and 1,787 feet from east lines of section 21 block A-44 osi survey. engineers may test the new Clear Fork pay or proceed to lower horizons.
In district court Judge G C Olsen directed a verdict for the Sherman Halliburton defendants in the Cummins vs Sherman Power Tongs case. Cummins alleged injury on July 29 1956 while employed by Henry Black Drilling. Counsel for defendants challenged the case after plaintiff presented evidence.
Andrews County joined statewide support for three constitutional amendments in a light turnout of 239. The pension amendment led with 220 yes to 19 no, the water bond proposal drew 204 yes and 35 no, while the retirement fund amendment faced 196 yes and 43 no votes.
United Fund donations reached about $12,000 with several cards outstanding and re contacts ongoing to meet the $18,145 goal. Of the total, roughly $1,400 came through pledges while the rest were cash gifts. Contributions can be mailed to Raymond Bristow at First National Bank or to Harry Cowan at the Chamber of Commerce.
A 1957 city report shows 209 building permits issued in the first ten months by Andrews with a total value of 1 809 905. New home construction accounts for 167 permits totaling 1 476 065, 29 commercial buildings at 258 200, and additions and repairs at 75 640. Tax collection through Oct 31 reached 74 991 32 of 124 848 18 due, about 60 percent.
The November county grand jury returned five indictments. James Ed Self faces breaking and entering related to a residence on Aug 15. R R Mc Kee Howard Beavers Fergus Graham and Janet Graham are charged with burglary forgery and passing forged instruments connected to a Sept 22 break-in at Liberty Well Servicing Co and subsequent forged checks.
The Andrews chapter of the American Cancer Society will meet at 7 30 p m in the courthouse basement with public attendance invited. Raymond Bristow will preside in Dr Neil Hayes absence. Mrs J L Bilbrey takes over the service committee chair from Mrs P B Storie as part of committee changes.
Mrs Jennie Lonis a longtime Andrews resident died Friday night at age 80 She had lived at 504 SE 2nd and was hospitalized eight days Funeral services were Sunday at 2 p m at Means Memorial Methodist Church Rev Tilden Armstrong officiating Burial followed at Andrews Cemetery under Singleton Funeral Home direction Her husband Charles Lee died last August shortly after their 62nd anniversary
