A gritty Andrews Monahans clash drew praise for its harsh play and fair conduct. The Bears and Frogs delivered a bruising, but clean battle, while local notes mention the Andrews Kermit road project and a forthcoming FHA housing build.
Texas Lions clubs organize a Food for Peace Train with committees in Andrews and Austin. Milk donations added. shipments must reach New York by the second week of November. A house to house canvass with Boy Scouts assists. perishable items not accepted. glass containers not allowed.
Funeral services were held in Flatonia for Lt. Cla rence Jaeggli brother of Mrs. L. H. St. Clair killed crossing a bridge in the Battle of the Bulge at age 36. He was a former teacher and a First Lieutenant in the Anti Aircraft Service. Mrs. St. Clair travels to Flatonia with her son Kenneth for the funeral. Jaeggli survived by his wife Velma Jaeggli of Abilene. The article also notes October tax collections and school funding figures for the county and Andrews Independent School District.
A Pecos High School Board of Education letter dated November 3, 1947 congratulates the Monahans and Pecos football teams for a clean game. It commends players and coaches for sportsmanlike conduct amid violations and states winning is secondary to moral and physical welfare of the boys.
County agent H L Atkins Jr says Andrews County needs fifty to seventy five cotton pickers. The Andrews gin near 200 bale mark, capable of thirty to forty bales daily. About 4000 acres planted with expected yield over a quarter bale per acre. Atkins notes this is the best cotton crop in years.
The Lions Club will sponsor a Negro football game in Andrews on Tuesday night November 25 to raise funds for the Benevolent fund. Coach Tubb announced engages Odessa and Midland high school teams for the rugged matchup. Tickets go on sale soon with a goal of one thousand. Proceeds aid needy local youth after paying the teams.
James B. Wilder was stabbed at the Lone Wolf Tavern in Odessa last week and carried by ambulance to the Veterans Administration Hospital in McKinney Texas. He remained in critical condition with treatment by a nurse aboard the ambulance. He had been hospitalized locally on October 23 following the assault.
Silly Caddell a seaman second class arrived home Friday after serving at Hume California attached to the motion picture department at the base. He is the son of Mrs. Ethel McDonald.
Charles Pippen Jr died Wednesday night in Denton Texas from a heart attack. He was a student at North Texas State College. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Cisco. His parents Mr and Mrs Charles Pippen Sr received the news and traveled to Denton. He was well known locally and leaves many friends.
Monahans defeats Andrews 21 12 in a hard fought football game before about six thousand fans at Sealey Field. Waldo Young opened scoring with a two yard run, Wendell Uechi and Carl Griffin added a late fourth quarter TD to seal the win after two Monahans calls for TDs were reversed. Jack Young connected for a late Andrews scoring drive to end the third, but Monahans held on in the final minutes.
Crowns were placed on three Hal lowe en Festival Queens at eight thirty pm in the High School Auditorium. Joy Lee McAuley Charlene McNeil and Ann Pilgrim were enthroned amid carnival ceremonies as school queens for high junior high and elementary grades. Escorts and royal court members accompanied the coronation in festive attire. Booths opened at seven and closed at ten thirty.
Andrews County hospital remodeling underway to add three offices and a larger lobby. The project will create space for two doctors and a dentist, move the nursery, place the delivery room adjacent to the operation room, and relocate the bookkeeping office to the emergency room near the waiting area.
Dr. Andrews Tombs, prominent Seminole physician and surgeon, operates the U S Tomb Clinic and Hospital. He is renowned for alcoholism treatment through medical care and Alcoholics Anonymous principles. In lectures he states recovery requires admitting a drinking problem and substituting good habits. He cites over 90 percent absenteeism linked to alcoholism and discusses a doctor in Abilene receiving his analysis of two patients being shared nationwide.
Officials announce the contract for 20.965 miles of construction on the Kermit Andrews highway in Winkler County will be let November 13. The project, part of the Big Bend corridor, aims to cut Wink to Lubbock distance by about 40 miles and will cost over $500,000 for heavy duty pavement to handle anticipated oilfield traffic. The adjacent Andrew County connecting road is already completed and opened recently.
In Central West Andrews County several oil tests are reported. Magnolia E C Nix No. 1 shows 7 548 feet depth with 7 057 to 7 135 feet test producing 30 feet of mud and abandoned as dry. Stanolind No. 1 Nix has reached over 8 260 feet in lime. Park No. 1 in lease Z21 yielded 94 barrels of 27.2 gravity oil with limited gas oil ratio. No. 9 J E Parker deep producer in the Martin Elenburger field reported 888.72 barrels in 24 hours with gas oil ratio 140 to 1. Pay section at 8 870 to 8 965 feet was natural.
The week of Nov 9 to 15, 1947 is designated American Education Week, sponsored by the National Education Association American Legion US Office of Education and National Congress of Parents and Teachers. Andrews school invites all to visit. visitors are welcome all week with suggested day grouping by surname initials to ease attendance.
