The Andrews County historical Museum Society will meet Thursday November 9 at 7 30 p m in the county courtroom to plan an open house for donors in early December and discuss donations and curator appointment. Board members include Bert Smith Mrs Joe Allbright Mrs Joe Weatherby Gerald McCaskill Reeder Price Mrs Bill Gordon and Gene Pearson.
Dick Carroll was named acting manager of the Andrews Boys Club. He said the club is open daily and invites the public to visit. The winter basketball league is starting, and the Boys Club fund drive has begun with a Monday night supper kickoff in the city.
Coach Fred Wier announced Andrews high schools 1968 football schedule. District 2AAA reshuffled after Ectors departure, placing Andrews in Seminole Kermit and Pecos for 1969, with Monahans and Fort Stockton at home. Non conference slate includes Coronado Denver City and Tulsa with one further date to be added. District games start October 25 at Pecos and conclude November 22 at home against Fort Stockton.
Tuesday marks the final day for absentee voting on amendments ahead of a Saturday election. Voters may cast ballots at the county clerk’s office in the courthouse.
In October Andrews saw two injuries from light accidents as total property damage reached 3515 dollars. Police Chief James Clark noted 15 accident violations and numerous citations for speeding running red lights no license and other infractions. The month included 23 warrants 11 drunk arrests bicycle and dog tag activity vehicle takedowns and 1857 in corporation court fines.
Open house is planned in all Andrews schools Monday night from 7 to 9 asking residents to view the final results of two bonds issued between 1965 and 1967. Total bonds amount to $1,128,663.04 with major improvements across Devonian, San Andres, Glorieta, Underwood, west and east junior highs, senior high, vocational building, Mustang Field house, and administration. Public invited to visit any or all campuses.
Bill Thomas 33 died at 9 a.m. Friday in a Little Rock hospital after a five month illness. Funeral services were planned for Sunday afternoon at Robinson Funeral Home in Pine Bluff. Thomas directed the Andrews County Chamber of Commerce 1960 to 1963 and later was a GOP representative from Midland. He was born in Pine Bluff, attended Arkansas State, served four years in the Navy, and worked with the Little Rock Chamber before moving to Andrews. Survived by three children Willie 12 Tammie 8 and Terry, his parents Mr and Mrs G E Thomas of Little Rock, one brother Everett Jr of Pine Bluff, one sister Mrs Juanita Elbert of Jonesboro, and cousin Mrs Kenneth Ray of Andrews.
Andrews Service Company becomes new name after acquiring Hickerson Transports and Permian Brine Sale and Service. Bob Ervin will serve as president and oversee operations at the Seminole highway location effective November 1. A. L. Hickerson continues other ventures in Hereford Odessa and the Permian Basin. The firm thanks past customers and promises continued service.
Charlie McCrury 75 an Andrews resident for 19 years died at 4 53 a m Thursday at Andrews Hospital where he had been a convalescent patient for three years Funeral services were held Saturday at Singleton Funeral Home Chapel with Elder M Jefferies of the Primitive Baptist Church elder H F James assisting Burial was in Andrews Cemetery He was a retired oil field worker and husband of Lorena He was born in Bogota Survived by wife three sons six daughters a brother 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren
The Andrews Mustangs rallied in the second half to topple the Pecos Eagles 20-6 on Friday night. Danny Daniels led Pecos with a 12-yard first-half touchdown pass, while Andrews featured a string of key plays including a 65-yard fumble return by Coy Watson and an interception by Steve Harrelson setting up the opening Mustang TD.
Tickets for the 15th annual Chamber of Commerce banquet go on sale at the chamber office with member priority until December 1. After that date sale follows a priority list and the event features David Brinkley as speaker on January 20 at 6 30 p.m. in the high school gym.
Building permits for the year up to October reach $852,872, ahead of 1966’s $843,033 by $9,839. The October 1967 total fell to $5,325 for four additions and no alterations, while October 1966 stood at $30,800, per City Hall records.
