Andrews Precincts Open As County Votes On 14 Texas Amendments

Andrews residents join voters statewide to cast ballots on the presidency and 14 proposed Texas constitutional amendments. Contested races include governor lieutenant governor attorney general comptroller land office agriculture railroad commissioner with Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 as a single Democratic versus Republican contest. Polls run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. absentee voting hit a record 302 by Friday afternoon. Precincts 1 2 3 and 4 listed with specific election judges and voting sites in the courthouse and Jack Horner primary school.

Chinchilla Show Slated in Andrews County

The Permian Basin Unit of the Southwestern Branch Empress Chinchilla Breeders Cooperative Inc will host a one day field day at the Andrews County Community Building. More than 100 chinchillas from West Texas and New Mexico are expected, with both mutation and standard animals shown. Judge Ed Tannick of Alamogordo will preside.

Local Charities Drive Begins Annual Fund Campaign

Local charities start their annual drive Monday to raise funds for food medicine and clothing for indigent city residents. Kenneth Sutton president notes the group disburses about $1 000 yearly and the last drive was in May 1967. Kiwanis Club sponsors the effort with Gary Miller leading the business section and neighborhood captains listing volunteers across northeast southeast northwest and southwest sections.

Meet Your Lawmen Jailer Deputy Serves Lou Underwood

Jailer Deputy Lou Underwood, a 13 year law enforcment veteran, serves the sheriff’s department after five years in the police. Born in Comanche County he spent years on ranches and oilfield work before joining law enforcement. Cox Named To PBHC Board In Odessa

Harold Cox has been named to serve on the board of the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center in Odessa. The non profit center, run by 37 local men and women, aims to help handicapped individuals regain independence through medical evaluation, clinics and policies set by medical volunteers. The center offers outpatient services for speech, hearing, language, cranial and occupational disabilities for both adults and children and has never refused treatment for lack of funds.

Andrews Man Found Dead

Aubrey May sixty two was found dead Thursday morning at his home 708 N W Ave A by his wife. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p m at Oak Street Baptist Church in Colorado City with burial in Westbrook Cemetery Mitchell County. Riker and Son Funeral Home in charge. May had been in ill health for several years. He was found between 6 and 7 a m with death set around 4 a m. He had lived in Andrews for 3 1/2 years, coming from Colorado City.

Andrews County allocates action on library book damages

In a special session Monday Andrews County commissioners authorized Attorney General Crawford C. Martin to pursue legal action to settle damages from purchases by the county library and related schools over children's books said to violate federal anti trust laws. The court also hired Carolyn Cook temporarily, approved travel to a US385 meeting in Springfield Colorado, accepted Johnny Smith Motor Co. bid for a 1969 truck at 5700, and moved 50 000 from general to officers salary fund with Judge Roy Bennett presiding.

Calm Halloween Queen Crowned at Local High School Carnival

Christi Shaw, sophomore daughter of W R Shaw and the late Joyce Shaw, was crowned Halloween Queen at the high school carnival held Thursday evening. Randy Laminack escorted her, with attendants Becky Belcher Joe Ray Pittman Linda Hamilton Billy Phipps and Sandi Brown. Keith Clanahan and John Parish presided, and the event drew record attendance and strong booth profits. One minor parking lot accident occurred at Piggly Wiggly with no citations.
