Mr and Mrs Howell receive a letter from Sgt Thomas E Love of Amory Mississippi a former prisoner of war in Germany who shared a camp with their son J P Howell since September 1943 He reports good health weekly Red Cross parcels and camp activities including a theater and chapel noting the boys appreciation for letters and parcels Answering any questions he will share more details and plans to return to Utah for hospitalization
Mrs Earneston Perry welcomes her granddaughter Donna Louise born October 26 in Houston Texas. Grandmother Mary Pace celebrates new family member as Donna Louise joins the Pace family.
Several important real estate transactions were completed this week. Mrs. Marvin M Fisher purchased the home of Mr and Mrs Carl Seal, and Mr. and Mrs M L Owens bought the rock house.
A number of Andrews youths in the armed services visited homefolks this past week. Mentioned are Dewey Braswell, Ben Keith, H. B. Albright, Eugene Little, and Lt Wayne Williams. Billy Dee Craddock, son of T. W. Craddock, reports resting in Belgium after active duty since D-Day, with actions through France Luxembourg and Belgium. Eugene Irwin is in France and Jackson Parker, formerly a local builder, now Major in India.
Lamar Forrest, owner of Forrest Lumber Company yards in West Texas with HQ in Lubbock, was elected president of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association on Oct 28 in Akron, Ohio. He has led Texas lumber groups and advised on OPA and WPB regulations, with an invitation for a Texas meeting next year.
The Singleton's Department Co. of Seminole and Levelland will occupy half of the Lockhart building. Mr. Singleton is in Dallas this week purchasing stock for the new store. This will provide Andrews residents with two shopping options and be a welcome addition to the city.
A W McCarley, son of Mr and Mrs A L McCarley, was wounded in It ay on October 12 in a letter to his wife. He says he was hit in the right shoulder and arm by machine gun fire and will remain in hospital for months. He trained at Fort Me ehan replacement center Alabama and went overseas last summer with James Warren Roberts.
Mary Edith Greer was crowned Queen of High School at the school carnival last Tuesday night by her escort James Rice. The Junior Queen was Jo Ann Hamilton with Carol Stewart as escort. Sophomore Queen Barbara Mc Reynolds was escorted by Leon Jackson. Freshman Queen Rose Mary Stewart was escorted by Ray Perkins. Each class thanks the community for support.
Postal rates are altered with special delivery letters moving from 10¢ to 138. Money orders and related fees, previously raised in March, are lowered toward prior levels. Postal insurance and COD charges decrease from March peaks, reverting toward earlier bases.
The Andrews Chapter of the American Legion will place a wreath on World War I graves at the local cemetery on Armistice Day November 11. Members meet at the Legion Hall then march to the cemetery for ceremonies at 11 o clock led by the High School band. Ex service men urged to attend Legion meetings on the first Thursday night each month. Mrs Adele Dilbeck of Dallas is visiting daughter Mrs Frances Tubb and family.
Plains Construction Company awarded contract to pave around the Andrews Court House Square and three adjacent blocks linking the High School with the Andrews Eunice Highway. Andrews Public Schools will pave front and rear of the school block.
A Musical Service will be held at the Baptist Church Sunday evening at 8 30 with members and musicians of the Andrews High School Band directed by Kenneth St Clair taking leading parts The service caps the church Endowment Program for the year Everyone is urged to attend.
Mrs. Walter Mathews Associate Matron and Mrs. Chas. W. Roberts Treasurer of Andrews Chapter of the O E S left Monday night for Fort Worth to attend the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. They returned Friday reporting a very interesting session.
Mr and Mrs Howard Glanton welcome a 9 pound boy born October 31. Miss Ruthie Williams underwent a major operation Wednesday the first.
Notice that a road bond election is scheduled for Saturday December 2nd. The report notes harvest progress for Andrews cotton with crews of Mexican cotton pickers and local participation by school children. The Farmers Co op Gin surpassed 100 bales. with favorable weather, much of the county's cotton crop is expected to be harvested.
Andrews Schools honor roll for the first six weeks includes four A students: Burkett Betty Guthrie Martha Jo Suggs Johnnie Lou Story Florence Ward and J B. An all school assembly will be held Wednesday November 8 at 11 am in the High School Auditorium. The general public is invited to attend. Mr Cecil Sweet superintendent of the Fullerton Oil Company was a visitor in Andrews Saturday.
Andrews County voters will decide December 2 1944 if bonds of 260 000 dollars shall be issued to finance macadamized gravel paved roads and turnpikes and whether ad valorem tax shall be levied to pay interest and redeem bonds. The court convened November 1 1944 issued the order for the election under state law. eligible property taxpayers may vote.
