Andrews Tornado Skirts City In Narrow Escape

A near miss tornado tracked from east of Frankel City toward Andrews in a wide pass across oil fields and pasture. Residents were warned that a mile south shift could have caused severe damage and urged better preparedness for future storms.

Andrews Pair Hurt In Wreck

Mrs. Edith Fleming and her son Ronnie were injured in a one car crash about 20 miles east of Big Spring. Ronnie remained in serious condition after spleen and kidney removal. Edith Fleming had a concussion and minor injuries.

City Council weighs warning system plans for Andrews area

The Andrews city council authorized City Manager Herb Sitz to coordinate with county schools and civil defense to develop a disaster alert system. A special joint meeting with other agencies may be held to discuss implementation following a twister alert confusion. The session also covered curb and gutter assessments raised by Tom Jeffreys, who owns property on NW 13th and Ranch House on East Broadway.

T. G. & Y Takes Over Ben Franklin

T G Y Stores Co announces the purchase of the Ben Franklin variety store in Andrews. The store will be inventoried tomorrow and open under new management May 21 with Dwain Serratt as manager. Regular TG Y merchandise to be added within 30 40 days. Larry Henry transferred to Muleshoe as manager.

Tornado Threat Reaches Andrews High School

About 900 students and staff in the Andrews high school faced a tornado alert as a black cloud approached. Assistant Principal Hutchinson issued the warning and urged students to stay calm and avoid windows during the hour long proximity.

Andrews County Gears for Billionth Barrel Celebration

The May 24 25 event marks Andrews County’s billionth barrel since 1929 led by C E Odgen No 1 in Fuhrman Masco Field. Tornado Threat Strikes Andrews Causes Fear and Alarm

A funnel cloud approached Andrews Thursday afternoon prompting sirens and a near-panic as residents sought shelter. The tornado touched down near Fullerton Field before lifting, with warnings extending to nearby Frankel City and a dramatic drive along the Odessa highway.

End of School Year Events Kick Off for Seniors

More than 100 high school seniors took a day trip to Six Flags Over Texas on Saturday. Final exams begin Thursday and Friday with exemptions for high averages and perfect attendance. Commencement rehearsals and the baccalaureate are scheduled this week, culminating in the May 27 commencement.
