Andrews Volunteer Firemen quickly responded Friday afternoon as a warehouse behind City Drug caught fire. The origin was waste paper and pasteboard boxes. The blaze did not reach the Drug Store and nearby buildings. Estimated warehouse damage was $3000. Bill Farmer reported insurance coverage.
The Andrews County Hospital pledges ongoing comprehensive care and public health betterment on National Hospital Day May 12. Hospital superintendent V L Reed thanks Andrews residents, the Andrews County News, city health committees, employees, and trustees for support and cooperation.
A new Wallace Theatre is scheduled to commence construction by May 15. Harvey Allen of Lamesa has held the plans for weeks and bids are expected to be requested soon.
Mr and Mrs G F Span are the parents of a baby girl named Janice born May 9 weighing six pounds four ounces Sympathy is urged for those in need rather than for oneself.
Andrews County 4-H boys may enter a garden contest open to enrolled members. Gardens must be 10 by 20 feet with at least ten listed vegetables. Awards range from 25 to 5 dollars. Entries due by May 31 1948 with judging between June 25 and July 15 1948 and based on rule compliance gardening ability and production records.
The first load of tile was unloaded this week for the Andrews Sewerage system which is due to begin within ten days. Manholes valves pipe and other material have already been placed on the ground. Work on the project under contract for the past six months was scheduled to start May 15.
Humble Oil and Refining Company will broadcast the 34th Southwest Conference Track Meet from Rice Field on Saturday May 15. veteran announcers Kern Tips Wes Box Charlie Jordan and Gene Heard will describe the two and a half hour event over seven Texas radio stations KTRH KRLD KABC KRIO WTAW KNOW KWFET. Broadcast time is 145 p m.
H V Carlson Magnolia employee attended the funeral of Mrs S B Carlson widow of his brother who died in McCamey on Monday. The Carlsons long lived in Andrews before moving to McCamey near Humble Camp. Burial took place in Meridian Texas. Rome was founded in 753 B C.
The Lions Club event drew a large Monday night crowd with about 400 dollars from tickets and candy sales plus around 50 dollars from auctions. Seventeen contestants performed songs dances and skits with Bob Wright Louise McQuarters Robbie Brumley and a Lions trio placing first to fourth. Also noted was Pat Beene an Andrews lawyer named on a bar of assault with intent to kill after a shooting incident involving his wife.
Floyd Peacock, Collector, announced that 1,192 passenger cars had been registered since April 1 through May 10. April registrations totaled 1,064, with 128 added in May, reflecting the ongoing monthly tally.
Four new homes are being built at Gulf Camp in the northern part of Andrews. When finished, six families will have residences on the site.
Senator James E. Taylor chairs the Gilmer Aiken Committee and announces the appointment of members to Andrews County Advisory Committee to Study Education. Names include Thomas D. Namilton A L Rhodes R P Southerton Clyde Broam C B Ham Irwin Hambrick K H Irwin J P Roach M O Woolam H O Smith and J Lee Smith.
State highway engineers begin a Dollarhide road survey this week. Tom Chessir of Lamesa leads the effort. A makeshift road built by county road machinery under D C Nix may handle light cars while heavy trucks should avoid it. Plans and specs for Mabee road are being prepared by Hasse and Green of Lubbock.
Raymond Martin posted bond after two fines. One from the city for disturbing the peace and another in County Court for resisting arrest. The fines stem from a disturbance in the Casey Case where Martin refused to submit to arrest as peace officers arrived. Total fines exceed $90.
All persons interested in the summer softball program are urged to attend a meeting at the County Courthouse Saturday afternoon at 6 30. An oculist is an eye doctor.
C W Spencer to open a brick and tile Humble station on the Andrews Big Spring highway east of the traffic light. The facility features two wash and grease bays, pumps, air compressor, and Esso Extra gas and 997 motor oil. It will offer accessories and invite public inspection Saturday. I G Martin jailed for alleged statutory incident with a 14 year old girl north of Andrews. bond set at 2500 after physician confirmation.
M. N. Ivey, a Magnolia Pipe Line employee, crushed his right hand and broke three fingers with severe lacerations when his hand was caught in the cross head pumping apparatus at the Magnolia Pump Station south of town.
Dr A J Armstrong will break ground for the 700 Browning Memorial Library. Dr John O Beatty of SMU will deliver the Browning birthday address at Waco hall on Browning's 136th birth anniversary. Construction equipment is on site with committee members Earl Hankamer D K Martin Ray Luedey Marrs Mclean present.
Mrs. Charles Goodall and daughter shopped in Odessa Saturday. Hub Nixon visited his parents in Brownwood Sunday while returning from the State Track Meet in Austin.
The State Highway Commission authorized paving two more sections of the Broadway to Big Bend route. Dustless two-lane roads will run from Andrews to the Winkler and Dawson County lines, contingent on Dawson County’s 75-25 financing plan. The project, costing about 245000 dollars, extends from Lamesa to Kermit, about 80 miles, with Winkler County already authorized.
James Edward Britt a 3 year old son of Mr and Mrs E G Britt died in a Big Spring hospital on Tuesday May 4 after an ambulance trip from possibly elsewhere to Big Spring in 55 minutes. It is believed death resulted from consuming a box of chocolate Exlax tablets. The body burial location could not be learned.
Jack Young of Andrews, an versatile all around athlete, placed in three events at the Texas state track meet in Austin despite an injured leg. He took second in the broad jump with 22 feet 0.5 inches, fifth in the low hurdles, and sixth in the 220 dash earning eleven points. Ferrell Nixon also competed in shot put and discus, showing well but not placing. Both boys have been offered athletic scholarships by several Texas colleges and some out of state institutions.
