Members of the Citizens Research Group heard a request from Mrs. James Fulgham representing the Andrews Garden Club to study lower summer water rates to encourage yard and garden improvements. Max Ramsey was named chairman to examine pros and cons.
Mrs Kathleen Danner becomes the new full time anesthetist at Permain General Hospital starting April 22. She trained at St Anthony's Amarillo and Baylor Dallas, served seven years at Childress General Hospital, and will move with her husband J G and sons Jimmie 12 and Johnny Lee 15 to Andrews after the school term.
Mrs. Martin J. Williams, a radio dispatcher in Andrews, and her husband Jay expect a new son via adoption in Western Germany. Friendship with Mrs O M Hounshell led to adoption arrangements in Heidelberg, where Mrs Joe Watson has coordinated the process for Becky Estelle, now three, and a possible blond blue eyed sibling. The plan includes Becky and the new baby returning to the United States with Mac in November.
Madison ends a nine year run in the Andrews grocery business. He opened a store with G I and T H McCann at 305 Northeast 3rd, moved to 210 Northwest 4th in 1949, then built the current location in 1951. Since 1952 he has served on the Andrews School Board. He plans to retire to fish and relax for about two months and then remain in Andrews.
The 80 member high school band performs in the auditorium at 10 30 pm for about 45 minutes. Eighteen seniors play their last games as band members. Selections include In a Persian Market Night defeat Joshua Si Trocadero and Stormy Weather. The alma mater High On The Plains opens and Old Black and Gold closes the program.
Violent clouds brought heavy rainfall across Andrews county from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Funnels were sighted 15 miles north while observers tracked and failed to confirm a tornado near Odessa Highway. Rain totals reached up to four inches in parts with two inches elsewhere, causing flooded roads near Big Spring and water in Mabee camp. The storm’s moisture boosts pasture prospects but dampens parks projects as roads flood and lakes overflow.
A petit jury panel of 42 residents has been called for service in 109th District Court Tuesday morning. Only one case is on the civil docket Hubert Collins vs Texas Employment Insurance Co a compensation case. Names listed for jury duty include Joseph A. On Mother’s Day Mrs George Myers celebrates Marilyn now normal after a rare heart operation two years ago. In Houston on April 17 Marilyn aged eight served as a model for Dr Paul Dudley White, President Eisenhower’s private doctor, during a lecture to heart surgeons from the Southwest.
A Friday afternoon storm struck the Frankel City Baptist Church steeple in Andrews County, igniting a blaze after shingles fell to the ground. Pastor Deagan Carr helped summon aid as the fire spread to the steeple and was described as near destruction.
In Central Andrews County five miles south of Andrews the University L No. 1 Well shows a Wolfcamp discovery with a 24 hour test of 173 barrels of 38 gravity oil at 8,424 to 8,584 feet and a gas oil ratio near 983 to 1. Other prospects include a Lower Spraberry washing 9,228 to 9,245 feet with 10 hours yielding 3 barrels lead oil and 32 barrels new oil, and multiple tests in the Falken Block near section 26, 40, T-2-N. A Strawn discovery in Midland Farms area is being acidized with 5,000 gallons and flowing 40 gray through a small choke. more results expected on Page 6.
Two city traffic crashes occurred Friday after heavy rains. Mrs. W M Moulder and Mrs Murdell Rowlett sustained minor damage in the 100 block of Northwest First, with $75 and $25 estimates. Moulder cited for no license. Police Chief Prentis Jones calls it the 60th city wreck this year, nine with injuries. Later, at West Broadway and Second, Donald Bryan De Hart and Bert Wallace collided. De Hart’s car about $400 damage, Wallace $25. De Hart cited for following too close. See WRECKS Page 6.
Jo Ann Pilcher, daughter of Mr and Mrs C A Pilcher, was chosen president for the 1957 58 school year after elections held Wednesday and Thursday. Ronnie Brice was elected vice president and Sandy Alcorn will serve as secretary after defeating Patti Carlisle. four cheerleaders will reprise their yells for the Mustangs.
