Two Andrews youths won top honors at Austin based ILT meet with Louie Ramirez repeating as state champion in numbers sense and Mike Rogers finishing second. Sadra Helton took second in extemporaneous speaking while Frank Price was third. Ford Roberson and Nancy Shoffit finished second and fourth in slide rule. In sports, Johnny Black and Les Burns lost to San Angelo Central 6 2 64 in tennis and Jerry Carruth finished 66th in pole vault.
The Kiwanis sponsored Key Club at the high school held a Friday meeting at school to elect officers for the coming year. Robert LaRue presided as outgoing president. Dug Belcher was named incoming president with Lynn Taylor as vice president, Steve Smith as secretary, and Larry Hutson as reporter. New and holdover members were listed, including incoming senior Bobby Hitt and junior Shelton Smith, among others.
Glenn Looney Texas Young Republican Federation state chairman will speak at Andrews Junior High School Auditorium on Thursday May 1 at 8 p.m. He helped found the Texas Tech Young Republican Club and was its president 1961-63 earning Young Republican of the Year. He has organized 25 YR clubs in Texas and teaches government at Texas Tech. The event is open to all Young Republicans parents friends and the public.
Texas and Pacific Railway seeks reconsideration of an ICC ruling approving construction of the Permian Basin Railroad from Odessa to Seagraves, linking with the Santa Fe line. James Roberts of the PBRR accuses T P of long delaying short-haul service while vowing to press ahead once the order stands.
Citizens may donate books at the Chamber of Commerce for a Rotary Club sale on May 22. Donors set sale prices. the club takes a 10 percent commission. Allen Ray McFall, Andrews High School senior, is one of 27 high school seniors earning a four year National Merit scholarship funded by Standard Oil Company Indiana Foundation. McFall plans to attend North Texas State University and is active as editor of the High School Roundup and a football letterman.
In a tight 7-4 District 2AAA game Ector Eagles held first place as they defeated the Mustang nine. Richard Ramirez earned the win for Ector while Doug Ham and Johnny Hatcher split relief for Mustangs. Helms Brannan Taylor Diaz and Jones produced key hits for the Eagles.
A trailer home owned by Gary and Mary Mosley in the 200 block of SW 2nd was heavily damaged by a fire Friday night around 9 p.m. Neighbors say the couple had been away about 30 minutes when the blaze started.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce sells black and gold license plate tags featuring a Mustang. Tags are available at the chamber office for one dollar to promote Andrews, according to Leo Lambert.
The new literacy center at Andrews County Library offers adult education classes for about 49 pupils. The Evening Lions Club donated $400 for supplies, with AAUW volunteers leading reading and basic courses. The reading group includes 39 members and many volunteers. Chairman Mrs. Jack Coleman thanked the Lions and civic groups for support.
Roe Price, longtime Andrews resident, is hospitalized at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston where he arrived on Thursday. The family is staying at the Surrey House in Houston. Relatives reported by telephone that they had arrived and Price was awaiting tests and treatment.
