The Andrews Public Schools plan their third annual Faculty Follies at Andrews High School Auditorium Friday at 8. Proceeds go to a future teacher scholarship fund. Dress rehearsal is Thursday. Notable acts include The House of Charles and a Gunsmoke themed piece by junior high, with several elementary performances and a surprise high school skit. Ticket prices are 50 cents for students and 1 to adults.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce Education Committee will send nearly 1300 children home Thursday with a survey to gauge demand for private music lessons. Dr B D Sanders chairs the effort and asks parents about family music lessons, instructors, instruments, future interest, and possible dancing or self-taught music options.
Absentee balloting began Monday for the school board election and starts Thursday for the mayor council election. The school board race on April 4 offers six candidates G D Arkie Reed Max E Ramsey Lasater Drexell C Underwood Henry C Spruill and James Roberts. Absentee voting runs to March 31 in County Clerk Sam M Smiths office. The mayoral ballot lists Leonard F Craft Dale Lane William Hert Smith and G Bert Smith with Craft the incumbent. The council slate includes Mrs Vernon Williams Duey Braswell E A McNeese Neil Hayes Charles McReynolds Raymond Sharbutt and Ed Lee with Williams and Sharbutt incumbents. Voting continues to April 3 for the April 7 election in City Secretary Dorothy Byrds office.
Midland and Borger are top challengers as the Andrews Mustangs enter Friday and Saturday in Odessa. Fresh off a third place at the Fort Worth Southwestern Recreation Meet the team will compete in thirteen events featuring world champions Morrow Sime and Davis among others. Entrants include Brice Shoemaker Nelson and Jetton in relays and Merritt in multiple sprints with a 100 and 120 hurdles also on the slate.
Readings show temperatures from 27 to 82 degrees over the past week in Andrews. Blowing dust occurred on Saturday and a light snowfall Sunday night, with peak heat reaching 82 and a low of 28. Data provided by Permian Basin Pipe Line covers March 11 through March 17.
Andrews County Commissioners convened in a special session Monday to extend Parker & Parker Construction Co for two additional days cleaning out the northwest lake. The firm will be paid 1750 per hour per equipment piece used.
The Downtown Lions Club will stage a two day sale of brooms mops and household items on March 30 and 31. Goods were made by blind workers at Lighthouse of the Blind to create jobs for the visually handicapped. Proceeds fund eye glasses for underpaid schoolchildren. Lions members will visit businesses and contact homes to collect orders and hold items for the club.
The First Baptist Church Choir presents Hallelujah What a Savior an Easter cantata by John W. Peterson Sunday at 7 30 pm in the church auditorium under Virgil Coffee Petersons direction. The program blends old hymns with new composition and scripture narration to recount the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Soloists include Mrs Jesse Camp Mrs Max Goldsmith Jimmy Albritton and Dale Houston. Organist Mrs Curtis Nix and pianist Mrs Carl Paslay.
Board of Trustees weighs options to cut costs and keep a 2 million ceiling for a new senior high school. A special luncheon heard a curriculum report and an administrators study proposing multiple use areas including theatre arts and crafts. Architect Reid met with the board in February. a misunderstanding kept a swimming pool out of the plan. Reid will reconvene with the board in early April.
Charles Clevenger won the top grand award for his electric refrigerator project at the science fair held Monday and Tuesday. More than 800 students and residents viewed exhibits from elementary and secondary schools as judging concluded with second and third place grand awards to Max Fisher for crystals and Jim Fisher for insects of Andrews County respectively.
Andrews High School band students earned forty first division medals at the spring Interscholastic League contest in Odessa. Soloists Janet Whitcomb and Larry Edge claimed top honors, with multiple ensembles and brass groups placing in first division across 22 events.
Police investigated two Monday car crashes causing one injury. Phillip M. Helton 305 North West 12th suffered a minor cut in a Northwest Avenue E and 5th collision with a pickup damaged $25. Gold en E. Hensley Crane received a $200 car damage ticket for failure to grant right of way.
Public invited to view the 1958-99 collection of 600 Junior Library books at Devonian Library from 7 to 9 p.m. Miss Jane Pool, librarian, notes free graded annotated catalogs. Sponsored by Andrews Public School librarians. no books are sold, exhibit promotes informed book selections for teachers pupils librarians and parents.
