With three injured runners and four in reserve, the team aims to repeat after last year’s 51 3/4 point championship and a strong Fort Stockton showing. Brady and Graham are favored in the track meet.
Max Ragsdale and Randy Pendleton, seniors on the 1955 Mustang squad that went 15 15, were unanimous all district selections by district coaches at a Seminole meeting. Leeman Smith and other Seminole players earned honorable mention and district averages show Pendleton at 17.79 points per game for the season.
Scouts from Andrews Winkler Ward county perform first of three circuses in Kermit in the old high school gym. The event, led by Jim Trott with Frank Elkins as announcer and R S Dillard senior as ring master, runs 7 30 p m. Tickets at the door.
George Pettus Morrow a 58 year old Odessa painting contractor died at Permian General Hospital from head injuries after his pickup overturned eight miles west of Andrews on the Kermit highway. He had contracts in Kermit and Andrews and was en route to Andrews when the crash occurred. Survivors include his widow Mrs Lillian Frances Morrow three brothers and four sisters.
The Andrews Mutual Concert Association presents The Telephone and Trouble in Tahiti in English, with five young artists including Marni Nixon and Marten Sameth. David Shapiro directs on a cross country tour. final program set for April 4.
A hot city election sees nine candidates declare for nine posts with two seeking mayor and seven for two alderman seats. Frank Elkins former chamber manager and Herb Brown foreman vie for mayor as incumbents Bill Sanders and Dennis Nix run again. Other candidates include Thad Ballew W A Lynn Ralph Merritt and Dave Kinney Jr. The election is set for Tuesday April 5.
Leon Chester, former Andrews high star and son of Mrs. Fay Curtis of this city, won both the high and low hurdle events at a Texas Tech meet in Lubbock on Saturday, continuing his strong track form this year.
White's Auto Store changed hands this week, Lawrence Abernathy selling to Wilbur S Jordan and J M House Jordan, a 20 year dealer, will run the Andrews store after relocating from Raton New Mexico where he ran a shop for six years. Mr and Mrs Abernathy started the firm and have no definite future plans.
Northwest Andrews residents receive over 600 poll cards to gauge desire for door delivery by the chamber of commerce. Voters may trade post office boxes for home delivery to reduce midday post office congestion and box shortages. A second petition targets downtown businesses to measure support for box elimination.
A Magnolia pipeline pump was extinguished at 6 20 p m Wednesday by the Volunteer Fire Department after an alarm from Walton Creech. The unit on the Texas Company Clark Lease burned for about two hours before crews stopped the blaze. Pump mechanic Jack Jackson estimated damage at 2500, possibly from a blown packing. H J Durbin led the semi automatic unit.
The City of Andrews reported the highest ratio of new sewer connections in Texas for 1954. Mayor Virgil Lasater received the honor from Henry Holle of the State Health Department at the Texas Water and Sewage Works Association banquet in College Station. City secretary L. B. Parrish noted about 400 new connections last year, bringing total connections to roughly 1,200, a fifty percent increase.
Two Andrews Mustang coaches briefed Lions club members at the noon meeting. Coach Max Goldsmith outlined the track squad with eight returning athletes and three top scorers, noting injuries. Coach Vernon Johnson discussed basketball prospects for next season, listing several developing players and the B team. The Mustangs finished 15 of 30 in district play, with Randy Pendleton scoring 18.25 and Max Ragsdale 17.12 points per game in eight district outings as Doyle Parker led in miles. The team total was 1217 points. opponents totaled 1256. Six losses came against Class 4-A teams and four against 3-A teams.
Over 1000 parents and patrons visited during Public Education Week as students prepare for an official holiday Friday. Teachers and administrators will attend the District IV convention in Lubbock while special programs ran across buildings. Eighty local businessmen attended classes on Wednesday and will invite teachers to visit their firms in a turn-about program. Approximately 224 junior high parents gathered Monday for a program and to attend classes launching the observance.
