A young Andrews couple recounts their son's ear correction by a plastic surgeon. After minor surgery and bandage removal the ears sit normally again, ending the boy's nicknames and transforming his confidence and sociability.
Warm temperatures and sunny skies mark a week in Andrews with daytime readings staying above 60. A yearly high of 83 was recorded last Friday while early mornings stayed mostly above freezing, according to Northern Natural Gas Co.
Last minute changes fixed the city council race at nine with John Stubbs swapping from school board to council. Grady Hester joined the council field, bringing the total to nine, while incumbents and mayoral candidates prepared for elections set on April 4 alongside school board voting on April 1. Absentee voting begins March 28 for school board and the city election opens at city hall next Thursday.
Approximately 6000 Girl Scouts and 1690 leaders in the Permian Basin Council run the third annual cookie sale from today through Saturday. The council targets 85000 boxes across 15 counties including Andrews Loving Winkler Ward Crane Upton Culberson Reeves Pecos Terrell Jeff Davis Presidio and Brewster. Proceeds fund Mitre Peak Camp projects and training with awards of Mitre Peak weekend camperships and engraved district plaques for top sellers.
County Juvenile Officer Marshall Cooper reports February saw eight juvenile cases, the lowest since November 1958. Eight cases included one forged check charge awaiting action and one habitual truancy case placed on probation. three thefts, two malicious mischief, and a Stanton runaway held for authorities.
Andrews school system will close Friday as teachers and administrators attend the Texas State Teachers Association District 4 convention in Midland. Public School Week prompts visits to classrooms, with 3 500 to 4 000 teachers expected. Panel discussions include Andrews board member Jack Shepherd and others on employment opportunities for grades 7 12. Dr Vernon V Sisney will address sessions at Midland High School Auditorium. Twelve noon lunches are planned and a retirement ranch home proposal may be discussed.
The Chamber of Commerce board adopted an oil and gas depletion allowance resolution this week. L. H. Bud Duncan was named director replacing Elmer Hurley. The measure opposes any cut to depletion rates and cites industry needs for tax provisions to sustain petroleum development amid rising costs.
Nominations for new officers of the Andrews Jaycees were made at a regular meeting Tuesday. Candidates include Tommy Singleton and Tommy Hixson for president, John Singleton and Kenneth Bartell for vice president, Joe Johnson and Bill King for second vice president, Fuzzy Knight for secretary, Colin Lampkin for treasurer, and Carroll Duncan Gary O'Rear Everett Phillips and Buddy Southerland for directors. Lamar Garrard, the out-going president, also seeks state director. Nominations may continue until election night March 28, with installation at the April banquet.
Andrews Mustangs finished second in the Southwestern Recreation Meet in Fort Worth led by Ted Nelson's 440-yard win and a 3 31.2 mile relay. Other teammates included McKissick, Cormier, Blackburn, Cooney, and Sandlin with notable jumps and throws. The squad heads to Seminole for the seventh annual invitational with 17 area teams and a new 13000 dollar track oval.
The district champion Seminole Indians top the first team with Ronnie Norton and Bob Measels. Charles Hillis of the Mustangs joins, while Pecos Jimmy Lasater and Ector Gerald Henry fill the first five. Doug Jeffreys makes the second team alongside Kenneth Hugghins, Charley Thompson, Arthur Davis, and Jim Tollet.
In a West Texas town the city and school planted 6000 trees at the sewage treatment plant. Purchased from the Texas Forest Service for 91.50, the fast growing windbreak will mature quickly using sewage water. The mix includes Austrian pine black walnut Chinese elm mulberry red cedar slash pine and sycamore.

Police Chief Clinton Dame announced two Andrews patrolmen Tom Vanney and Hugh Chumley were placed on a two week suspension without pay and a 60 day probation period for violating departmental procedure.
Seven indictments were returned by the grand jury in 109th District Court. Earl James Reed and Alvin Raymond Willis face theft over 50 dollars charges. S Gomes Morales Claude Ray Morgan and Bobby Wayne Brown are charged with forged instruments. Fred Clinton Hedges is indicted for burglary at the First Baptist Church office and W H Breiten for defrauding with a worthless check. A civil case Beard versus Maryland Casualty was settled out of court. The Bailey versus Texas Employers Insurance Co case was set for today.
