The Magnolia No 1 Tom Peay well west of Florey shows oil with a drillstem test of 29 barrels per hour and 15 minutes in the lower Permian. The find renews optimism about local acreage despite deep-depth surprises and limited expectations.
The Toops home hosted a Sunday family gathering with siblings present including Mr and Mrs Gene Mann of Tulsa Oklahoma Mr and Mrs Kenneth Mann Leveland Mr and Mrs Virgil Baker and children of Hobbs and Mr Mrs Gene Reeves of Oil Cen.
Miss Blanchard won first place at the Lions Amateur Show in the high school auditorium. Seventeen acts performed over two and a half hours, with Jodie Smith second for piano, Alice and Colleen Appleton fourth for Chattanooga Choo Choo, and Sonny Oswalt third. Dr. Z W Hutch eson hosted, 53 merchants donated prizes, and Max Ramsey thanked contestants and merchants.
Andrews voters will elect a mayor and two council members on April 3. Wm Pinky Peoples is the sole mayoral candidate, while Ray Porter D C Nix and Knox Irwin compete for the two council seats vacated by the terms of H E Clack and W L Stell. Incumbents Virgil Lasater Forest Noble and H M Louis seek another term.
The Andrews Independent School District will elect two trustees on March 7. Incumbents J. B. Neil and John H. Massey face re election. Applicants must file by a set deadline prior to the election.
Two young men from Jal New Mexico Joseph Leandy Collum and Thomas Cates were arrested after burglarizing an Odessa service station on Wednesday night. They gained entry by breaking a window and stole two batteries and two flashlights before being picked up near the Kaiser-Frazier Agency on the Funice highway and turned over to Deputy Sheriff George Bosley of Ector County.
Andrews public school teachers travel to Lubbock for the Texas State Teachers Association District IV convention. The first general session runs 2 to 4 PM with leaders Dr. Travis White and Dr. Roe Bartle. a 7:30 PM session features Dr. John Carroll and Robert E. Jackson. Sections cover topics with H. O Smith Lyda Kelly and C S Chorte leading groups. School dismisses until Monday morning.
Norton Furniture has relocated one door north of the telephone exchange into a new Underwood building facing north on Broadway and will operate as Furniture X Change. The firm will continue to sell new and used furniture sewing machines and Server Refrigerators with expanded space to better serve customers.
Mrs. George Oakley of Ardmore Oklahoma is visiting her daughter Mrs Z W Hutcheson this week.
The 1951 Red Cross fund campaign begins Monday with a call for generous donations to support disaster relief, medical aid, and community services across the region.
City officials urge all dogs six months and older to receive the annual rabies vaccination and city license. City secretary O G Weatherby said a city dog catcher will patrol after Tuesday to impound dogs lacking vaccination tags.
The commissioners court appoints L. C. Milliken of El Paso as full time county agent to serve agriculture needs of the county. He is a Texas A&M graduate with three years of experience and will replace the prior three-county setup run by Martin. He is married with a three year old daughter named Myra.
Rev. E. Brand announces special services at First Baptist Church Sunday to celebrate the second anniversary of the new auditorium. Juniors to be honored, special music by the Junior Choir, and a goal of 500 in attendance at the 11 o'clock service. A $15 family offering is intended to retire church debt, with services for the entire family.
March 31 marks the final moment to obtain 1951 license plates for autos, trailers, and trucks. Sheriff Floyd Peacock notes midnight is the deadline and plates feature back numerals on a gold background. Deputy clerks Mrs. Lowa Underwood and Mrs. Derre Woolan urge early visits. bring car title and last year’s receipt.
Claurern Varciss and Wissel wear thinner clothes as chatter grows. It amazes patrons to see Stir's dancing with girls. Some observers say women resist being pushed by other women.
Roger Glover nephew of Archie Roach showed his steer to the reserve championship at the Sand Hills Hereford show in Odessa weighing 916 pounds. Frank Newsom Alpine county agent judged the steer. Glover previously won dry lot champion honors in the tri county show with Andrews Ector and Crane counties. Auction set for Saturday at 10 a.m. and steers to be sold.
The Mustang Drive-In theater will reopen March 25 after winter closure and repairs to hoodlum damage. Manager Jimmy Burleson announces the reopening with the film Sorrowful Jones as repairs continue. Wallace theatres operate three local cinemas. He urges moviegoers to report vandalism to authorities.
Mr and Mrs W M Pinkie Peoples announce the formal opening of their new Humble Service Station on Main Street in the Lenis Shaddix Mercury dealer building. The brick and stone station offers modern auto service and invites the community to visit Saturday March 10 with gifts for visiting ladies. Local and out of town Humble representatives will attend along with the Peoples staff.
Andrews school system begins a health program with Dr. Neil Hayes examining all students for cavities and defects. Parents of those needing care will be notified by school nurse Mrs. Bob Luck. The dentist emphasized preserving baby teeth past age nine to prevent crowding and noted excess fluoride in local water prompting plans for fluoride-free water until age eight. Wayne Gillihan, a former graduate and Army Air Force member at Wichita Falls, spent the weekend with his parents.

Oil men report Magnolia No 1 Tom Peay in Lower Permian yields 28.87 barrels in 1 hour 15 minutes at 8170 feet after gas appeared in four minutes. Several wildcat efforts by Sinclair Kerr McGee and others planned within Andrews County and nearby fields as deeper tests target Ellenburg er and Grayburg formations.
A revival begins at 7 30 p m Sunday at the First Christian Church in Andrews. It runs through March 23 with evangelist C M Day, father of Dwight Day of Edwardsville Illinois. Everyone is invited to attend.
The annual Red Cross fundraising campaign begins Monday led by drive chairman Dr. Z W Hutcheson. Sons club members and the Woman's Forum volunteer to collect funds in the business district and residential Andrews area with oil camps in the county also covered. Volunteers are urged to help solicit funds under the slogan give and give generously.
Mrs. C. F. Burns died in a local hospital after a two week illness from a cerebral hemorrhage and was taken overland to Healdton Oklahoma for funeral services and burial by Singletons. She was born November 29 1899 in Healdton and had lived in Andrews about three years. Survived by husband C F Burns mother Lizzie Quinn Healdton two sisters Blanche Peden Colorado Springs and Jessie Amerson Gilroy one brother E R Quinn Albion Illinois.
Mrs. Cora Heath enlarges the Heath Hotel dining room to accommodate growing patronage. She plans to move the dining area from the residence portion into the hotel and reconfigure the kitchen to double capacity.
Members from the Andrews Rebekah Lodge joined a Friendship Meeting in Levelland on Tuesday night. Attendees included Mmes Ch'oe McCrary Mattie Mathews Mae Etter Eric Mae Walker Carrie Walker Euelia Orden Winnie Merritt and Mr and Mrs Pat Gerrett from Seagraves.
