A 60 year old oilfield pumper was seriously injured Thursday when an oil emulsion heater exploded at Midland Farms on a Pan American base 18 miles southeast of Andrews. T. E. Swift was found unconscious and transported to Permian General Hospital with multiple injuries. Roy Buckner of Pan American said the cause is under investigation and no fire occurred. Swift has worked for the company 19 years.
Charles F. Bishop co owner of Economy Oil Co filed by Friday for the April 6 Andrews city election challenging incumbent L. H. Duncan. The only other contested race is for place four on the council with incumbent Fred Hughey facing R. B. Jordan while Eugene Demmler is unopposed for place three. Absentee voting runs March 17 through April 2.
Susie Alexander, a 95 year old resident of Andrews Hospital, reflects on life across two worlds from Reconstruction days in the South to the present. She recalls slavery, her family moving to Cherokee County Texas, and stories from her mother about a Northern spy. See SUSIE, Page 6.
Funeral services for Mrs Myr tle Gordon 63 are pending at Singleton's Funeral Home. She died at 9 30 am Friday in Permian General Hospital after being patient since Monday. An autopsy was performed. A 17 year resident of Andrews she lived at 200 ME Ave F. Her husband a well service employee for 17 years. She moved here from Gatesville. She was a member of Slater Methodist Church. Survivors include husband J. and seven daughters L D Hargrove Carlsbad George Little and Eugene Caufield Midland Ben Weeks Littlefield A A Basham Keller M O Forbus Jacksboro and Darrell Denny Tripoli Libya plus father H S Holtzclaw of Killeen two sisters J S Parham Lubbock and Clinton Newlin Florence three brothers William Wastforth Crawford Santa Fe Louis Austin 20 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Coach Max Goldsmith led the Flying Mustangs to first with 92 points at Brownfield. Kermit took second with 78 and Amarillo finished third with 67. Hugh Davis set a discus meet record at 162 feet 3 and a half inches. Jerry Cooper placed third, Jack Keen won the mile, Gene Young finished fourth, Calvin Hubert won shot put at 53 feet 3 inches. Grace Baptist Church marks its seventh anniversary with a 1 30 p m banquet in the community building. Organized in 1958, the church aims for 277 in Sunday School as services begin at 10 a m with worship at 11. Special guests include Rev Jessie Hill and family of Sharpstown.
Proposed zoning ordinance tentatively approved by the council divides the city into 12 districts to keep industry from homes and homes from industry. A public hearing is set for May 25 with SF 1 strictest, SF 2 allows two family uses, and mobile homes permitted in general residential areas.
