Police log three traffic accidents in the city with no injuries. On Thursday at Northeast Stn St and Ave E a collision between Jack C. Schookey and Edward C. Martin caused $125 in damages. Friday morning Mer rell Cruse and Dee Lansford each sustained $150 in damages in the 1100 block of West Broadway. Sunday afternoon in the 500 block of North Main Patrick Munn and Lanelta Gail Perkins sustained $100 and $200 in damages respectively.
Andrews Mustang track squad splits Saturday with No 1 boys going to Graham for Possum Kingdom Relays while others head to Monahans for its invitational. The mile relay and sprint relay groups feature Tate Perkins Ham Hart with Yadon Jetton Cain Linn, and McLean joining sprint group. The team then faces four straight weekends of meets, culminating in regional and state shows.
Officials from the city county school and Chamber of Commerce met to review a long range plan for a community park. A preliminary layout by Martin Lemmon and Merrell was shown and found satisfactory. Immediate actions include a Little League park a high school baseball diamond and lighted tennis courts funded by the county school and city respectively.
Officers of the Permian General Hospital medical staff were chosen at a staff meeting. Dr R R Ramsey was elected chief of staff with Dr E B Dempsey as vice chief and Dr Murry Wood as secretary treasurer. Also named were Dr Z W Hutcheson Dr Harry Tompkins Dr Neil Hayes and Dr Jack Fielden Everett Solomon and nurse director Mrs Henry Solomon attended. A new monthly staff meeting was approved to discuss patient care with the first meeting set for the first Tuesday of each month.
Alfonso Anthony faces assault with a deadly weapon charges after a Saturday shooting in the Flats. Victim Buster Hill remained hospitalized at Permian General Hospital with head neck and shoulder injuries from birdshot from a 12 gauge shotgun. hospital staff warned Hill's condition could worsen though he had eased from critical levels earlier in the week.
Three candidates announce bids for the Andrews Independent School District board in the April 6 election. Incumbents Dr W Hutcheson and Johnny E Smith join newcomer Kenneth McCraw of Dollarhide. Filing ends March 26 with ballots in Andrews Frankel City Dollarhide and Mabee Camp.
Howard B. Walters 70 a former Andrews County commissioner died Tuesday at Permian General Hospital following a stroke four months earlier Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Church of Christ with burial in Andrews Cemetery Walters longtime Andrews County resident since 1929 came from Lamesa He is survived by wife Ruby two sons Howard and W B Walters a daughter Mrs H Dodd three brothers four sisters 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren
Dr Neil Hayes named committee chairmen for the newly formed county Cancer unit. J B Youngblood heads Education, Mrs P B Storie leads Service with a March 12 meeting, Johnny Allen in Crusade, Mrs M W Avery to Publicity. Nancy James of Midland chapter aided setup.
Andrews County polio chairwoman Mrs. Mary McFall urges all residents to take polio shots at two clinics the Andrews Medical and Surgical Clinic and Wood's Clinic. Shots are quick and painless with no undressing required. No exam is needed unless requested and there is no age limit. A series of three shots over time yields about 90 percent protection.
Health officials plan a free mobile chest X ray unit in Andrews on April 12 and 15. The Rotary Club sponsors the project with local women assisting in registration and hosting duties. The unit requires no undressing, takes minutes, and reports are confidential and sent to the individual's physician.
Two cases of runaway youths occupied the sheriff's department this week. Deputies said both groups were located and held until parents could retrieve them. A Sunday report involved two teenage girls missing from home and found in Abilene after a look-out alert. They had taken a parent’s car. The second case, a teenage boy, left by bus and was found in El Paso on Tuesday.
