Campaign supporters urge a by pass and flood control funded by a 30 cent county tax with five year use of proceeds. City officials discuss financing, bond option, and impact on homesteads while rail traffic and downtown congestion motivate the plan. Local chamber backs the project and a community banquet signals broad support.
City and school officials report the current water system will be strained in summer. The school system will be upgraded to peak capacity, with wells pulled and overhauled and an eight inch trunk line expected to carry about 1 250 000 gallons daily. If needed a new well or extra line may be added. Long range plans include a new water producing area.
Capacity crowds expected for two Lions Club sponsored performances at the high school gym. The 21 act show features Arami Singh and elephant Jennie with aerialists wire artists and other famed acts, with tickets 60c to 1.20 in advance and 75c to 1.50 at the door.
Funeral services for Harvey Lee Red Craddock aged 48 were conducted Saturday afternoon at Means Memorial Methodist church. Rev J L Mayhew of Sinton led the rites.
Stanley Shipp, Church of Christ minister, will hold a 10 day revival at Fullerton starting Monday March 9 with daily 8 p m services announced by E W Snow pastor of the Fullerton church. The revival follows Shipp's recent move from Knox City Texas to Wyoming last summer and marks his third revival appearance in the community.
A flash explosion at a Phillips tank battery base near Andrews fatally burned Elzie Moore of Odessa and critically burned Wayne Prock, also of Odessa, both employees of Williams Construction Company. Prock was inside the tank finishing a cleaning job when the blast occurred.
Bob Means visits Andrews to discuss estate issues while a Phillips lease explosion victim remains unidentified due to severe burns. Dumas fans flood the Lub bock regional tournament, and readers report sand blowing incidents in Andrews with unusual debris. Art's Cafe adopts individual telephone hookups for oil workers.
Tommy Hood, president of the Andrews County Chamber of Commerce, announced a water study committee to assess Andrews city water needs. Dr. Z. W. Hutcheson chairs with Albert Sybesma Eugene Neuerberg L. B. Williams and Charles Roberts Jr as members.
Three candidates filed for city offices this week with City Secretary L B Parrish as the April 7 election nears. Herb Brown seeks mayor, with Dr C Nix and Bill Sanders as aldermen. Nix resumes his campaign after previously stepping back. Incumbents Nix Porter and Mayor Peoples will complete terms this year. Returning aldermen include H M Louis J R Bills Jr and Charles D Alcorn. Brown is an architect with Haynes Kirby in Lubbock. Sanders is a First State Bank cashier. Nix runs cafe owner and former county commissioner. Qualified voters vote Tuesday April 7.
County plans to call an election on a 30 cent ad valorem tax to fund a by pass route near Andrews and other road projects. Officials from the Commissioners Court City Council and Chamber of Commerce discussed funding options and long range paving plans to avoid bonds. Support from the chamber and city council was pledged as a final action on the proposal approached.
Andrews Mustang track team heads to Fort Stockton to compete in the Comanche relays. Last year the Mustangs tied Denver City for the Basin title and face Wink, Junction, and Denver City this time. Prelims are Saturday at 10:00, finals at 2:00 PM. Coach Max Goldsmith fields runners in most events including Dorland 100 yards Helvey Montgomery in 440 Mayes 880 Gooch mile and Ellis Chester in 120 low hurdles.
Five candidates enter the Andrews Independent School District election field for three three year board seats. Incumbents John Singleton Clyde Broam and Charlie Carruth seek re election joins Dr Neil Hayes and Albert Sybesma as hopefuls. Balloting takes place Saturday April 4.
Andrews Lions Club luncheon honors the A and B Mustang basketball teams and coaches, with 21 extra practice sessions cited. Coach Everett Nicholson praises loyalty and work, cites scheduling issues and aims for an improved next season amid conference challenges.
An election for zones 2 and 3 in the Soil District was held at the Court House Mall in the afternoon. Milton Ramsey notes all residents of the county eligible to vote are counted, with a delegation from Andrew County organizing the process.
