Keith Clanahan, incoming student council president at Andrews High School, was chosen by the Texas Student Council Association as one of ten Texas presidents to attend the National Student Council meeting in Baltimore Maryland. He is the first Andrews student to win this honor since Roy Bode in 1966 and one of about 400 presidents from across the United States expected in Baltimore this week. He is due back in Andrews Thursday.
A grass fire burned Friday afternoon half a mile south of the Andrews Gaines County line. Andrews volunteer firemen battled the blaze for about thirty minutes until it was controlled. Drivers are cautioned about dry ranges and urged to extinguish cigarettes and matches before disposal.

Monahans and Kermit youths clinched the championship of a two day junior invitational golf tournament after a sudden death playoff on the first hole. Huckabee of Monahans and Emer son of Kermit joined Kent Hale and Tommy Chatham in the playoff for the title.
The annual Highway 80 tournament visits Odessa Midland Andrews and other cities ending in Abilene. Beverly Braswell is the Andrews second seed in girls 14 division. Harold Cox Mrs. Averyt and John Kniffen finalized plans for a three day meet. Top seeds include Marty Harris Barbara Bramlett and more across divisions. Matches take place on three court sets including the new golf course edge courts.
Jeff Hays, 28, a Gaines County farmer and son of Marvin Hays of Andrews County, died of gunshot wounds Sunday night. Found in a pickup near an irrigation well on his father's farm at the Andrews Gaines line. Justice of the Peace ruled death a self inflicted gunshot injury. A 20 gauge double barrel shotgun was in the car with one barrel fired. A note was left but contents were not released by officials. Services were held Wednesday.
The Andrews' Boys Club sponsors a memorial drag race at Andrews County Airport on Sunday. The event honors a local figure and invites community participation and support.
Sherman Rockow a 19 year old, admitted to Permian General Hospital with abdominal knife wounds. He underwent surgery and was reported improved. A juvenile was questioned by Juvenile Officer Bill Manning as the investigation continued.
