Three Mustangs Tom Ryan Johnny Hatcher and Steve Rose were named to the AAA all state tournament team with near unanimous votes. Daryl Helms accepted the runner up trophy for the team in Austin and a city resolution commending the Andrews High baseball team was presented to Coach Pete Smith at the Downtown Lions Club. City leaders cited athletic distinction across district regional and state play and thanked the community for support.

Pan Am Head Due Transfer to Oklahoma City
Jack Brown area superintendent for Pan American Petroleum will be transferred August 1 to Oklahoma City to serve as area superintendent of that district. Andrews will welcome Bill Kimbrough as new superintendent, coming from Midland where he was assistant district superintendent. The Browns have been active at First Baptist Church and in Downtown Lions. Mrs Brown taught in the language development preschool program here.

Major League Baseball Tryout Camp In Andrews
For the third straight year a major league tryout camp will be held at Mustang Field in Andrews on June 21 22. The Montreal Expos oversee the camp with Red Murff arranging scouts from the Expos and area colleges. High school college and independent players are invited to attend starting at 8 30 a.m. on Saturday. Participants should bring a uniform shoes and glove and the event ends with a game between two selected teams.

County commissioners in regular session approved spending $600 for Christmas lights and decorations from downtown Amarillo. They temporarily hired Marilyn Horn for the county library Judy Gantt for child welfare and summer staff including Don Leatherwood precinct 3 Larry Martin precinct 2 and Evalyn Stewart auditors office. They authorized Texas Electric to cross Permian General Hospital grounds for electric service to the clinic and sent district and county clerks to the Fort Worth conference June 24 28.

Area Rain Cancels Events Amid Strong West Texas Storms

An All-Night gospel sing drew about 1700 people despite wind and hail, moved indoors at the last minute as the old high school auditorium filled beyond capacity, with overflow sent to the gymnasium. The singing groups alternated between venues.

Local Woman Out on Bond After Kicking Deputies Car
Miss Vicky Lynn Hall 20 of Andrews posted 1500 bond on a destruction of county property charge after kicking the windshield of a deputy’s car on the southeast Butane route early Monday. She also faced drunk and fined charges. Highway Patrolman Buff Angel made the arrest and drove her in, with City Patrolman Mack West assisting. Deputy Don Rogers took part in the incident. In a separate action this week John Burleson Nichols was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

James Kirkpatrick of Lubbock was named new director of the Andrews Boys Club effective July 8. He replaces Phil Dyer who has accepted a similar position in Denver. Kirkpatrick is a physical education major at Texas Tech and plans to complete one course by correspondence. He and his wife Carol will live at Permian Apartments here. They are Methodist.

Sallie Hill Services Held in Andrews Cemetery
Graveside service was held Saturday afternoon in Andrews Cemetery for Mrs. Sallie Essie Hill 74 who died Friday morning at Permian General Hospital. A 30 year resident of Andrews she was born June 12 1895 in Erath County and survived by daughter Jackie Allsup and five sisters Rosie Brown Bessie Collier Billie Watson Ollie Backhaus and Cora Vaughn.

Injured Pumper Hurt by Cattleguard Incident
Horsel G Miller a 55 year old pumper for Continental Oil was seriously hurt when a cattleguard fell on his chest wounding ribs and possibly lungs. He was taken to Permian General Hospital by Scotton ambulance. A theater fire near the Eunice Highway marker briefly drew fire units but was extinguished quickly.
