A blood donation drive offers $5.00 or a pint of blood to insure families for a year. Technicians arrive on June 23 by appointment only. Insurance often covers hospital costs, but some illnesses make blood costly. The plan is described as reputable and safe, with appointments via auxiliary ladies.
California congressman Clyde Hosmer shares a monthly satire titled District of Confusion. He critiques tax policy, wartime and postwar taxes, Vietnam war spending, social security rhetoric, anti poverty campaigns, and calls out government spending while noting claims of prosperity and not war. Midland's H L Brown Jr and W J Heath target re entry and cleaning to 12 000 feet for Wolfcamp testing in No 136 B University Andrews County 12 700-foot dry hole. Seco Production No 1 Crawford State Ellenburger probe 33 miles west of Andrews in Lea County NM. Pure Oil No 1 S J E Parker wildcat tested to 12 750 feet in Ellenburger after flowing oil and gas from Wolfcamp with 14 hour drillstem test yielding 37 barrels of 39 gravity oil and 390 000 cubic feet gas daily. Humble Oil No 1 B Allen Cowden shows in Devonian Fusselman formations near East Dollarhide field with gas flow and oil recovery data. See OIL Page 8.
The city launches its annual summer recreation program with playground youth center and pool activities for all ages from pre schoolers to high school students. The center opens daily with crafts, ping pong and table games, arts instruction by Sheila Askey, and a $0.50 participation fee for youth center activities. Swimming lessons run with two lifeguards on duty, a $3.50 fee per swimmer, required physicals, Red Cross certificates, and multiple sessions from early July to mid August. Local women may swim Saturdays for ages 18 and up from 11 am to 1 pm. admission is 35 cents.
A fire at 1010 NW 7th caused about 2000 dollars damage while the Wheat family was away in Colorado. Firemen report the blaze started in a back bedroom and origin is undetermined. Three fire trucks responded as heavy smoke and water damage occurred.
The Permian General Hospital board approved 24995.24 in bills and authorized 500 for new parking lights east and west of the hospital. They tabled drilling a water well and considered 24000 in x ray equipment and a film processor. May data showed net profit 1338.34, total net income 57772.65 and operating expense 56434.31.
Appointments for blood donation are set at Permian General Hospital for the Southwest Blood Banks plan sponsored by the Andrews Women’s Auxiliary. One pint covers a year for transfusions to treat cancer ulcers leukemia and other diseases for the donor and eligible dependents with no age limit or required exam.
Deputy Sheriff Dee Langsford, aged 60, at Permian General Hospital after ten days treatment for a stomach ulcer. He was listed in critical condition on admission and has served as an Andrews law enforcement officer for 16 years. Doctors say he will remain in hospital for an indefinite period.
Andrews county farmers hailed what Pete Millican called a million dollar rain as 3.3 inches fell over three days. The storm aided dryland crops and allowed replanting for winds damaged fields while also boosting grass growth. Mile distance rainfall varied with six inches in parts and two inches elsewhere.
A combined board of equalization and public hearing on the 1965 66 county budget will be held Wednesday by the commissioners court. No salary increases are proposed. At noon the county hosts the tax men at a Pioneer Park barbecue. The equalization board meets at 9 a.m. to hear protests and requests for property valuation reconsideration. A public hearing on the budget follows the equalization meeting with more than 40 oil company tax representatives expected. The proposed budget is 1 476 000 with no increase from the current budget. A total of 1 216 000 must be financed by ad valorem taxes. Revenue 260 000 comes from license tag sales and office fees. The proposed tax rate of 1.60 is based on 10 percent of the 80 000 000 assessed valuation, yielding 1 216 000 at 95 percent collection. Of the 1.60 rate, 2634 cents funds permanent improvement bonds, 35 cents goes to the road bond fund, and 98 goes to the operating fund. Debt service is 463 915.
The Andrews Police Department will start its annual Law Officers School this Monday, running through June 25. The two week program is sponsored by the Texas Department of Public Safety with DPS officers from Austin and Midland assisting.
The Andrews County Library starts its summer reading program for elementary students with about 600 participants expected. Registration is open with no entry deadline, and hours run Monday through Friday. Participants earn certificates and ribbons, with 289 certificates awarded last year.
N O Green of 907 NW Ist was bitten 18 miles southwest of Andrews in the Triple N field while performing roustabout foreman duties. The Gulf Oil Co. employee was treating a rattlesnake he thought was a bull snake. a fellow worker killed the snake and Green was admitted to Andrews Hospital Inc for emergency care. The snake was about a foot long.
The Boy Singers from Boles Home Quinlan will sing at 7 30 p m Tuesday at the Downtown Church of Christ as part of their three month summer tour through Texas and 13 other states. Directed by Allen Lewis the seven to fourteen year olds perform a cappella hymns and spirituals free of charge. Doyle Keley announces the public is invited.
The second session of drivers training begins tomorrow at 7 30 a m in the high school Little Theater. Charles Russell notes three weeks of classroom instruction with driving from July 2 to August 6 for about 200 students. Tuition is 15 dollars and entrants must be 14 by July 5 1965. Instructors include Glenn Frazier Nile Cole Arion Kellum Fred Piper Dalton Criswell and Russell. The program started June 7 with a classroom finish on June 25 and driving through July 30.
