A town reads Pop Wrights weather warnings and learns about tornado dangers. It explains tornado basics, alert versus warning, and safety steps for open country and in town, urging shelter and caution for Andrews residents and noting regional tornado history.
Evange list Billy Graham's The Restless Ones shown June 5 6 7 at the Rose Theatre Andrews highlights teen age crisis with a 1963 LA Crusade backdrop. The film delivers a Christian message through a realistic plot about teenagers and parents and features a World Wide Pictures production under Dick Ross. Local committee chaired by Dr Z W Hutcheson with tickets through First National Bank Commercial State Bank Jones McCall Pharmacy and Wilkins.
The Story Hour at Andrews County Library begins June 7 at 10 a.m. for children ages 4 5 and 6. AAUW officials oversee the program with Mrs Russell Austin assisting the local branch. sessions run each Wednesday through the summer for preschoolers.
An all day open house is scheduled Saturday at Jones McCall Pharmacy in Northwest Island A. Coffee and cookies will be served and door prizes awarded. The event invites old customers and prospective new ones to visit the newly remodeled facilities.
Albert Sybesma manager of Andrews Hospital Inc and Bill Conder business manager of the Andrews Clinic were among delegates attending the Texas Hospital Association meeting held last week in Houston.
The Texas Junior Partnership Golf Tournament draws over 100 junior golfers from across the state. June 9 and 10 at Andrews Country Club, directed by G. W. Warden, 18 holes daily in a 36 low ball tourney. Entries due June 6. prizes donated by 17 local merchants.
The Humble Oil Company Memorial Day golf tournament drew about 80 players from Monahans Midland Andrews Snyder Hobbs and Kermit. Champion Bob Agnew Monahans edged runner up Bob Tonkin and Jake Roach while Florence Larch Midland took the ladies title.
Oil company tax representatives and the school board reviewed the proposed 1967 budget of 3,293,986 with a 338,738 increase from the prior year. They approved it with caution noting a leveling off in expenditures, and discussed capital outlay, bus needs, raises for teachers and staff, and the high school lawsuit funds.
Sheriff J A Bud Gregory warns residents after 8 dynamite caps and wires were found near the high school along the butane route. About 200 caps were stolen last week in Odessa as part of the loot. Children found 32 caps and an alerted parent turned them in. A further 54 caps were recovered. The sheriff urges not to move caps and to report finds immediately.
The local Boys Club shut down its drag race fundraisers after a $300 loss in a Sunday meet. Club Manager Pete White noted 600 volunteer hours per race and said the effort would not continue. Final turnout reached 100 cars with Mr. Chevrolet Kelly Chadwick winning two of three.
Guilty pleas were entered in 109th District Court before Judge Russell Austin. Ruby Lee Roy Mann Bobby Joe Mann of Abilene received five year burglary terms for Otto's burglary. Billy M. Black of Andrews got four years for car theft with concurrent terms in Comanche and Midland forgery. Black involved in theft of three Corvettes last fall. arrests by Andrews sheriff's department.
A sellout crowd is indicated for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet with Dr Norman Vincent Peale as main speaker. Peale, famed minister of Marble Collegiate Church in New York, also broadcasts The Art of Living and editsGuideposts.
Walter Shipman son of a former Andrews coach appeared on statewide TV after finding a bomb while fishing at a lake near Lewisville. He wrapped the inert device and delivered it to a nearby military base with his father assisting, recalling the coach’s remark about moving to fish for big ones.
Junior Rodeo officials push toward a three day event starting next Thursday with a downtown parade featuring riding groups and junior entrants from West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. A Thursday barbecue, guests from Girlstown U S A, and Beta Sigma Phi are announced. Opening show at 8 p.m. with nightly performances and Queen candidates featured in the parade and each show.
Red Cross swimming lessons run in three sessions June 12 through August 11 at the city pool for ages five and up with a doctor’s certificate. Cost is 3.50 for all three weeks. Registration evenings vary, with Monday through Friday hours, except Wednesdays. The center also offers arts and crafts and games on Monday and Friday mornings starting June 12 for ages 9 to 12, under Diana Shaw and Dotty Smith.
