County Clerk Sam Smith reports eighty one absentee ballots cast so far in the Democratic Primary. The figure marks an increase from two years ago. A recent check shows sixty two voters since last week, and residents away on July 26 have until Tuesday to vote absentee.
The Andrews County Commissioners Court met Monday approving Sheriff Ray Phillips to hire Bill Hyman as deputy with bond. Approval to buy a portable scale and trailer for 827.50 for 4-H calf feeding. Mecca addition subdivision approved. Road paving on Northeast 7th Street and damages payments of 100 to Hamlin and 1 per load for water to Galloway and Doty. Final estimates for Little League park and pool add totaled 8792.12 to contractor and 176.86 to architects.
Bobbie Lee Fletcher a 17 year old Negro youth remained in Permian General Hospital yesterday after Sunday night wounds from a knife and broken bottle in an altercation in the Flats with Robert Lee Haggins who suffered a bottle head wound. Haggins was fined 50 dollars and costs for aggravated assault in county court. Fletcher’s charges were pending his dismissal from the hospital. District Judge G C Olsen revoked the probation of Mrs Juanita Stout who was sentenced to three years for bigamy and later placed on probation. Mrs Stout was arrested on a warrant for house burglary in Rockwall. R Johnson was fined 126 50 for bootlegging and officers recovered one half pint from his home.
Andrews area sees Tenite Pony League All Star selections led by Percy Morrison. Mike Compton and 14 others will face Jal’s All Stars tonight at 8 15 p.m. at the county softball park South Andrews with a return Friday and a possible Monday decider to determine district representative.
The area Little League All Star tournament will be held here next Monday Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the new Little League ball park. Local leagues presidents announced the bid by National Little League and American Little League officials. Play begins Monday at 6 30 with a double header Big Spring Texas League vs Andrews American League and Big Spring National League vs Andrews National League. Tuesday at 6 30 Big Spring American League vs Goldsmiths League with semi finals to follow. Thursday at 7 30 the championship determines who represents the area in Rotan district play offs.
Temperature and water use rise sharply over nine days with highs near 107 on July 13 and 105 on July 14. Data from Permian Basin Pipeline Co shows daily highs from 64 to 107 and lows around 65 to 75, while water use climbs from 812000 to 2765000 gallons.
