The city council on Monday night appointed three new members to the zoning and planning board and renewed terms for two others. New members are Mrs. Johnny Smith, G. W. Bennett, and Ww. C. Young, while Roy Smith and Lawrence Martin were reappointed for another term.
Two Humble Oil and Refining Company workers were injured when an electrical pole toppled onto them south of the production yard around 10.00 am Monday near Forey. Odie B Russom, 33, suffered fractures to both legs and a compound fracture of the right leg with severe abrasions. Howard D Waiters, 44, sustained ankle injuries and two broken ribs. The pole fell due to wind blowing sand away from its base. Both men were removed to receive treatment. Russom’s condition reported as fair later. Construction at the courthouse progresses with basement and second floor work. New jail sections for women and juveniles rise on the second floor while rail equipment is installed on the south side. Hixson Construction completes meeting room, second floor paint, and home demonstration offices. Basements receive 950 square feet for home demonstration offices with reception, storage, and work areas as wiring and partitions go in.
The Chamber of Commerce will award its first annual Citizens Award at its January banquet, honoring Andrews’ most outstanding citizen for community contributions during the past year. The winner may be a man or woman and need not be a chamber member. Further details will follow. Also reported: more than $19,000 has been disallowed or stopped by the solicitation board, potentially saving about $380 per top firm.
The second annual City Recreation track meet is scheduled Friday at Mustang Stadium. Boys and girls ages 6 to 13 may enter. Events start 6 p.m. field events and 7:30 p.m. running events. Buses will transport entrants from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Six prizes per event to be awarded.
The Jubilee committee will offer a 10 inch souvenir plate for Andrews County's Golden Jubilee. Designed by Nancy Miller, the emblem shows the shift from cattle country in 1910 to oil country in 1960, surrounded by county ranch brands. The plate includes brands such as the C Ranch, Cowden Brothers, and Scharbauer Brothers among others.
The Andrews school board voted to cancel the annual student injury insurance program after a review showed only 45 percent uptake and frequent non payment of medical bills. The board approved a limited self insurance plan for athletic injuries and accepted the resignation of Spanish teacher George A. Gonzales and granted maternity leave.
Moisture ladened clouds dumped rain across most of Andrews County on Tuesday evening, yielding about one inch in town and up to a quarter to an inch in outlying areas. The week’s rainfall pushes the season total to roughly six and a half inches, with cooler nights and highs near 97 degrees earlier in the week providing a relief from an earlier heat wave.
A weekend spree by burglars hit four coin machines citywide. The Broadway Cafe on West Broadway saw a Saturday night entry and about $40 missing from a cigarette vending machine after the lock was knocked off. Early Sunday, Lloyd Brothers Station and Bill Stagg El Paso Dixie Station had cold drink machines pried open with no money taken. Scotty's Recreation was entered over the weekend with about $19 removed from a cigarette machine. all incidents suggest the same tool was used.
