Reports describe a brief, powerful hail storm that swept a two mile wide swath in western Andrews County area. Wind speeds over 70 to 130 mph felled telephone poles and damaged mesquite and shinnery as residents noted huge ice sheets. No fatalities reported.
A government survey finds those over 35 plan three times as many automobile purchases and twice as many washing machines refrigerators and TV sets as those under 35. The data suggest older couples drive more consumer buying than young couples.

The board of trustees approved two long range policies at the regular meeting. One targets the summer recreation program with a study by city county and school representatives and a 25 percent cut in next summer budget. The other seeks to reduce student time away from regular classes by reviewing activities and travel, cutting band and choral trips, and trimming faculty and administrator travel by 20 percent.
The 1961 62 budget proposes a 10 cent per 100 valuation tax cut and a 533 508 balanced total. City Manager Marshall Pharr urges tighter non budgeted item control and emphasizes efficiency over capital projects while funding street maintenance and lighting improvements. A sanitary container system for downtown is planned with 12 000 this year and matching 12 000 next year. The plan includes making the court clerk full time and moving the Municipal Court to the new City Hall for better enforcement and records. A special meeting Saturday may grant temporary budget approval ahead of August public hearings.
A formal Masonic cornerstone laying for the new Andrews City Hall is planned for six this evening at the building site on Northeast Ist Street and Logsdon Avenue. The Most Worshipful Master W G Procter of Waco will lay the stone, assisted by local Masonic officers. The event is open to the public.
Abilene Summer Recreation track squad under Coach Max Goldsmith sends about 30 boys to the Abilene ACC Stadium Saturday July 15 for the third summer meet. Top teams Lubbock Odessa are expected. Abilene seeks crown after wins in Lubbock and Andrews.
Burl Greaves, an Andrews High School student, completed a U N visit with a six day stay at the United Nations. He toured the building and met delegates from Czechoslovakia and the Philippines while missing the Russian delegation due to student selection. The trip, sponsored by the Oddfellows and Rebekah Lodges, included interviews and questions about elections and government. Greaves recalled evasive double talk from the Czechoslovak spokesman and noted a hospital stay in Lebanon Missouri on return. J. H. Whitley co owner of G and W Tire and Supply was appointed to the Chamber of Commerce board of Directors to fill the unexpired term of Dr Ed Dempsey who resigned after moving to Odessa Dempsey had been elected to the CC board last December for a three year term
Plans for the second annual Crazy Days promotion in Andrews were finalized. The three day event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce retail committee runs July 20 to 22 with 40 painted pigs roaming the streets for a $10 gift certificate prize. Merchants anticipate record participation and dress in crazy costumes with awards for best outfits and best store display.
Permian General Hospital occupancy fell to 85.7 percent in June from 93 percent in May, with 183 admissions and an average stay of 5.12 days. The month saw 36 patients per day, 1079 care days, 20 births at Andrews hospital, and 3 operations split into 26 major and 28 minor surgeries.
Andrews and nearby leagues announced their All-Star rosters ahead of the district tournament set to start July 26 with a four night single elimination series and a July 29 final. National League picks include Giants players David Eggleston Jerry Yarborough Jerry Carruth Ronnie Mahurin and more. American League selections feature Telephone Co players Gene Hatcher Mike Jones Steve Byrne Jerry Fuson and others.
