City council discussed water system rights of way and tougher street repair rules. They voted to rent a 20 by 26 foot space behind the Mize and Burkett Building to move the tax department from crowded city hall.
The city police and state highway patrol warn drivers of improper mufflers and excessive noise with fines up to 100 dollars. Chief Prentis Jones cites Texas Motor Vehicle Laws to enforce muffler and exhaust standards. Three traffic accidents are reported this week with injuries and vehicle damages ranging from 75 to 500 dollars.
The local Red Cross chapter reports 87 cases handled since January 1, mainly for active servicemen with three for veterans. Categories include emergency leave health and welfare reports hardship discharges and deferment from overseas duty. In June the chapter handled 23 cases and spent 130045 dollars on home service cases for the year ending July 1 1957. James Reed was named chapter chairman Max Ramsey chairman of the board and Dr Harry Tompkins secretary. Board members include J Lee Smith Mrs J A Ulmer Jim Jones and J W Moxley. Mrs Seay was re elected executive secretary for the fourth time.
Twelve cases of beer were confiscated by police Tuesday from a vehicle en route to Lubbock. City officer Earl Cummins spotted the beer in the trunk as the car stopped for a flat repair. Three men were arrested and jailed on illegal possession of alcoholic beverages charges.
An editorial urges Andrews citizens to vote on home delivery, arguing city growth and high receipts justify delivery. The piece notes current obstacles and explains three ballot questions about establishing city delivery and choosing residence or business box service with parcel post included.
City residents endured scorching heat with highs around 112 degrees and average above 100. Water use peaked at 3,104,000 gallons in a 24 hour period, occurring on a cooler day of the two week span despite the heat.
The Citizens Research Group, led by president Joe Tidrow, will convene tonight at 7:30 p m in the new junior high cafeteria. Water usage jumped to 50 503 900 gallons for May after nearly 7 inches of rain, with a peak 2 446 000 gallons on the last day. From June 1 to June 7 consumption was low, then climbed sharply as temperatures neared 100 degrees mid month, doubling and tripling from early June levels.
Don Snow 24 was found not guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor by a County Court jury. The 13 year old girl involved claimed to be his wife but could not produce a license, and Snow testified he had never lived with her. Police officers testified to the couple's movements and lack of a valid marriage. The witness list included city policemen Clinton Dame Earl Cummins and Police Chief Prentis Jones. Dame described Snow's June 15 drunk driving arrest and pursuit of a claimed wife at a trailer court in Southeast Andrews. The trial featured Snow defending himself after declining counsel. The School Board adopted a 1957 58 budget of 2 209 761 10 with a tax rate of 161 per 100 valuation a nine cent cut from 170 The rate funds 124 for current operations and 37 for debt service aided by 85 000 carried over from last year The board accepted Madison's resignation naming Troy Lasater secretary and will hear treasurer proposals August 13 Also approved bids for two station wagons and renewed a contract with Pritchard and Abbott.
West Texas golfers join the annual Pro-Am and Andrews Invitational starting Friday with qualifying medalist play. Roy Peden defends his title, while Cotton Kilpatrick and Terry Dill headline a field including Frank Freer Buster Tuttle Chris Blocker Buddy Phillips George Addison Jim Dixon Henry Whitley and Jerry Hobbs. Low 32 compete in presidents flight with two rounds 18 holes Saturday and one round Sunday. Entry is 10 dollars including Friday barbecue at 6 pm.
Recording star Roy Oberson and area favorites The Roses headline a one and a half hour concert at the high school auditorium tomorrow night. Sponsored by the Andrews Jaycees, admission is 1.00 for over 12 and 0.50 for under 12. The show starts at evening time with Oberson and The Roses recently cutting a new record set for release.
