The Neighborhood Program in Andrews County received probable approval as the federal Office of Economic Opportunity released $211,919 for 12 months to a 20 county area including Andrews. Judge Roy Bennett notes the program operates under the Stanton offfice and last year engaged about 15 students working 26 hours weekly at 1.25.
A record breaking 4H Horse Show was underway Saturday night with Gordon Cox as superintendent and Russ Hudspeth as judge. Winners were named in four halter and four performance classes with trophies for champion horse and showmanship. Winners advance to the district show in Del Rio on July 18.
Roe W. Price 47 a lifelong Andrews resident died at his home 703 NW 11th Thursday July 6 at 40 p.m. He was born August 22 1919 in Hobbs and owned a grocery in Andrews. Survived by wife Clarence two sons Frank and Steve a stepdaughter Mary Beth Mayfield Fort Worth and two sisters Mrs Helen Anderson and Mrs Elnora Sherrard Andrews plus his mother Mrs Frank Price Andrews. Funeral at Downtown Church of Christ Saturday 2 30 p.m. with Doyle Kelcey Brownfield and Dale Simpson Andrews officiating. Pallbearers listed with honorary names included.
Ralph Horner and his family were arrested as Andrews tourist of the week by Sheriff J A Gregory who then offered a free night’s lodging at Guest House Motor Inn a free dinner at Nix Restaurant a tank of gas and access to the pool Bowlarama and golf. The chamber plans to stop one family weekly to attract visitors during tourist season.
The Andrews Highway 80 Tennis Tournament concluded after three days of matches with top state netters. Coaches Jack Coleman and Sam Gantt praised the event and Chamber of Commerce sponsorship as a big success. Rudi Nelson of Andrews won the Girls 16 Singles 63 64 title over Cindy Bramlett, while Rudi and Kippy Payne claimed the Girls 16 Doubles 6-1 6-3. Other finals featured Joe Williams and Coleman in men’s singles and Watts and Judy Shepherd winning Girls 18 Doubles.
County commissioners in a special session transferred 3000 from the general fund to the golf course fund. They also employed Edna Williams temporarily for one week at the City County Health Unit starting July 6.
Andrews County Museum Board will meet Monday at 8 p.m. in the County Courtroom to plan item collection and display for the new museum wing of the remodeled library. The board will name directors and study county history, inviting local residents with historical items to loan artifacts with donor information.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce civic committee studied reviving a United Fund in the city after citizen requests. Martin Epps and Brodie Hutchinson led reports on campaigns and yard of the week contests. A July Fourth picnic was proposed for next year and the next meeting was set for August 2.
Area representatives from Texas Electric Service Company and two cotton research economists will visit Andrews on Tuesday July 11 to discuss local opportunities for cotton product manufacturers. The study aims to assess area cotton quality and identify economical, marketable products for local firms with the goal of attracting textile industry and creating new jobs.
Jays Grocery and Market moved this week to 100 NW Avenue K. The store plans a grand opening soon after closing the former store at NE Ave. K and the Butane Route.
Andrews County 4-H will stage a dress revue Tuesday July 11 at Lillie Theatre High School. About sixty girls in clothing projects will model garments under sixteen leaders with a judging at 9 30 a m in the County Extension Center and a 8 p m public session at the Little Theatre. One senior and one junior winner advance to the District Dress Revue August 1 in Fort Stockton.
Tickets for the four night Jaycee Trade Fair run July 19 are in local merchants. Nightly prize drawings tickets can be bought at the Little Shop and many sponsors list including Sears Roebuck Co and Piggly Wiggly. The Delta Beta Epsilon Sigma Alpha Miss Andrews Contest features Little Miss through Miss Andrews with entry blanks from the Chamber or banks. A country party with barbecue fiddlers and a square dance is slated for Saturday at Pioneer Park starting 5 p.m.
