The project, on State Highway 176 from the Frankel City Odessa crossroad to Market 181, spans 16.9 miles through Andrews to the Lamesa Big Spring Y. The program targets 158 projects across 104 counties to widen narrow pavements, widen shoulders, and add hazard protections such as culverts, barriers, access controls, and frontage roads.
Temperatures stayed mild most days this week with springlike highs reaching 69 degrees. Cold nights produced frost down to 23 degrees last Thursday as Permian Basin Pipeline Co provided weekly readings.
The chamber of commerce board met at noon with four new directors Bill Young T A Roach John Stubbs and Byford Sealy. A year end financial statement was presented by chamber manager Harry Cowan. An audit committee was formed with Young Sealy and Jim Herz berger to review the statement. A Fort Worth trip report by Dr Neil Hayes and plans for a shorter direct route to Terminal airport were discussed and assigned to John Stubbs's transportation committee.
The Ministerial Alliance held its monthly meeting and set a March 9 county wide religious census inviting all churches. A steering committee led by Frank Crown, Carl Grissom and Tilden Armstrong was formed to start the census. They also urged a county wide Vacation Bible School from June 2 to June 13 and revival meetings October 5 to October 12, with next meeting February 25 at Nix Cafe.
The Andrews Mustangs clinched a share of first in District 2-AAA with a 59-50 win over Kermit, leaving Pecos solo leader at 4-1. Four Kermit players fouled out as Andrews held the edge in a bruising rivalry, aided by strong free throws and balanced scoring from Brice Whitworth Perrin and Sherrard.
An unofficial school census reports Andrews County at 12,372 residents, down 216 from 1956. The city totals reach 10,525 residents, up six from last year, while county school age children total 3,094, with 2,608 inside the city and 486 elsewhere. Preschoolers total 1,794, up 104, with 1,524 living in the city. The census aids planning and is conducted annually for school and public service purposes.
The city council will meet Monday to receive the final audit report and swear in newly elected members. City Manager J L Horner said auditors nearly finished and could report soon. The session also discussed the Addressograph machine and police equipment upgrades.
Dr Harry Tompkins has been appointed County Health Officer by the county commissioners court to serve the unexpired term of Dr Murray Wood who died last week. A resident physician at Andrews Medical and Surgical Clinic, Tompkins has lived in Andrews six years and this will be his first term in the post. Wood had held the office since early last year, previous to which Z W Hutcheson served.
