March of Dimes Mothers March Aids Birth Defects Polio Fight

Friday night over 250 mothers will march at 6 pm under Mrs Jack Shepherd to raise funds for the 1960 March of Dimes. Twenty area captains will canvass the city by 8 pm while residents are urged to leave porch lights on to aid the drive. Each household will receive the Door Count form to report birth defects arthritis and polio cases and vaccine histories.

Chamber Banquet to Draw 300 Guests in El Paso

The 7th annual chamber of commerce banquet draws about 300 members to Glorieta cafeteria tonight starting at 7 30 p m. Judge Alan Fraser will be guest speaker with outgoing president John Stubbs passing duties to Byford Seal.

Dimes Benefit Radiothon Set By Downtown Lions

Downtown Lions Club stages a five hour radiothon Sunday from 1 to 6 pm on KACT from the high school auditorium to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Supt. T A Roach chairs the event with Roy Smith leading a talent committee featuring the high school band choir and local acts.

Two new babies Wake named Troy Jefferson and Michael Don were born in the last three days. Troy Williams arrived at 1:20 a.m. January 26 weighing four pounds. Michael Taylor born at 6:55 p.m. January 25 weighing six pounds, twelve and a half ounces.

Poll Tax Sales Hit New High with Late Hours Set

Andrews county reports a record 2950 poll tax receipts issued by the tax assessor collector. Over 80 exemption certificates issued. office to stay open all day Saturday and until midnight to accommodate buyers. Eligible voters include those 60 or older on January 1 1959 or who turn 21 after that date may vote in 1960 without paying the tax with an exemption slip required for the 21 year old.

Andrews County Hospital and Jail Bond Election Planned

The Andrews County commissioners called a $1.6 million bond election to fund a new county hospital and courthouse jail improvements. Propositions include $1.5 million for a 62,500 square foot hospital with 74 beds and $100,000 for courthouse and jail expansion to finish the jail’s second floor and basement offices.

City Council Halves Fire Insurance Rate After Hose and Ladder Purchase

The Andrews city council approved a 2 cent cut in the key fire insurance rate following a survey that cited a shortfall of 800 feet of 2 inch hose and a long fire ladder. The move, plus a $892 payment for damages to a rancher, is expected to save about $1200 in premiums next year.
