City council debates Logsdon property for city hall and fire station citing parking limits. Critics urge Blair lot purchase to expand space while lighting and safety projects move forward. Community praise for Outstanding Citizen Award and Kennedy inaugural reflections noted.
Charles E. Carruth was named Andrews Outstanding Citizen of the year at the eighth annual Chamber of Commerce membership banquet at Glorieta cafeteria drawing 300 attendees despite bad weather. J B Thomas of Texas Electric Service Co. unable to attend. W G Marquardt stood in with a talk titled Texas is on the move.
The Tri County Group Foster Home Inc will hold its annual stockholders meeting at 8 p m today at the Andrews County Courthouse. Stockholders are Andrews Ector and Midland counties residents with $1 voting stock. Committee chairmen and workers will report on past year improvements and activities. A nominating committee will present names to fill expiring Board of Trustees terms. Mrs Noble and Doug Gilliland of Andrews are trustees whose terms expire. See FOSTER HOME Page 3.
Two school sponsored events arrive in Andrews with NTSC A Cappella Choir tonight and the Harlem Stars basketball exhibition Friday. NTSC choir directed by Dale Houston performs at 8 p m in the high school auditorium as part of a Texas New Mexico tour. The Harlem Stars face a local faculty team in the high school gym at 8 p m Friday after a 7 15 p m seventh grade intramural game. Ticket prices start at 1 00 for adults and 50 cents for children with pre sale offers from science club members and discounts before Friday night showtime.
The annual school census is finished and workers are in a clean-up campaign. Attendance officer Kenneth Sutton urged families missed in the census to call him at 33640 so final figures can be tabulated, stressing all families with school children should be counted.
In Odessa Tuesday night the Ector Eagles built an early nine point lead and held on to beat the Andrews Mustangs 57 to 55. Andrews was hampered by two varsity players being dropped for grades. Skinner Frazier led Andrews with 19 points while Charles Hillis had 17 for the Mustangs. Sam Henry scored 18 for Ector with Presley Cooper adding 17. The loss puts Andrews in a three way tie for third with Brownfield. Ector remains two games behind Seminole. The Ponies beat Ector B team 50 to 46 in the preliminary.
Andrews saw its first substantial rainfall of 1961 on Tuesday followed by the first hard freeze of the year. The early Wednesday low reached 15 degrees, with about 1.25 inches of rain reported and a cold wave driving temperatures downward before sundown. Snow flurried Tuesday night as clouds began clearing on Wednesday. Temperatures previously climbed into the mid 60s Sunday and Monday.
H. T. Wilson, county auditor, recovered from a heart attack after admission to Permian General Hospital. He was placed under oxygen and treated for a coronary occlusion, with condition improving from critical over the weekend to satisfactory by Wednesday.
City Council split 3-2 to place a new city hall and fire station on Logsdon Avenue as a McGill lot purchase for 7500 dollars was approved. Architects were authorized to draft plans with a 151000 total budget and limited parking at the Logsdon site.
The News corrects a Sunday story stating Jake Armstrong was ordered to pay 225 dollars monthly. The correct amount is 25 dollars per month. The correction clarifies the court action and the proper support obligation.
The city council authorized 70 mercury vapor street lights along two major highways into town, with nine more on South Main, 16 on North Main, 12 East Broadway, and 23 West Broadway near the Kermit-Eunice highway Y. County commissioners plan further expansion past the city limits. Installation should start soon and finish by early summer.
High school principal J. Lee Smith announced adult night courses in bookkeeping and typing will start January 30 if enough sign ups occur. Typing would meet Monday nights and bookkeeping Tuesday nights. interested people may call the high school office to enroll.
