A chaotic Tuesday night game between the Mustangs and Indians built to a neck‑and‑neck finish as players and crowd swayed with every play. The narrative captures the tense atmosphere, intense coaching, and shared excitement of a classic shootout at the gym.
Dr. Victor L. Bowers and Prof. John R. Ballard of Southwest Texas State Teachers College visited Andrews to study building needs and flexible designs. They praised local elementary facilities as economical and adaptable and said ideas from Andrews could aid a planned two million dollar expansion at San Marcos.
Andrews businessman R W Thames announced his bid for precinct two commissioner. He cited his Texas birth, long residence in nearby counties, and Civil Service work, promising parks and a county cooperative park system while stressing honesty and community focus.
With the deadline growing closer, 1,154 poll tax receipts had been sold by Wednesday noon per County Tax Collector-Assessor records. The Jan. 31 deadline applies to voting in all local and state elections. Exemptions may be available for those who turned 21 between Jan. 1, 1957 and Jan. 31, 1958. Local office has issued 14 exemptions.
Maxwell a former council member and band director along with Lonnie Gross owner of Gross Garage filed for two vacant council seats. They join O B Raburn in seeking the unexpired terms of Otis Ogden and W C Lyons, with elections set for next Tuesday and filing deadline 5 p m Friday.
Special Agents Bud Gaskill and Bill Adders of the FBI from Midland visited Andrews on their routine monthly patrol. They checked for service members from the area who are absent without leave from their units.
Final report shows Goodfellows collected 1710.70 last Christmas with unreported gifts boosting total above 1700. About 50 to 60 Andrews families benefited. Funds spent mainly on clothing certificates and food toys. The group clarifies aid scope to Christmas season and a clothing room open 1 to 4 Tuesdays.
Twenty returning lettermen and 14 newcomers form the Mustang track cadre under Coach Max Goldsmith. The squad, eyeing a nine-meet spring, opens Feb 22 at Abilene in a triangular against the host Eagles and North Side of Ft. Worth. Standouts include Brice in sprints and hurdles, pole vaulter Dale Allen, distance runners Linn Cummins Cook Yadon, and several promising juniors and first-year runners.
A benefit bridge tournament hosted by Tau Tau chapter of Beta Sigma Phi supports the March of Dimes drive. The event runs 1:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the country club with $1 tickets. Patsy Bain at 33880 or any club member sells tickets. prizes donated by Hulen.
A V Al Peacock longtime resident of Frankel City and Andrews announces his candidacy for precinct two commissioner joining incumbent Gene Irwin and Jay Williams. Peacock a welding contractor since 1945 cites county city cooperation and plans to meet voters before the July primary. He was born in Murray Texas in 1914 and lives at 610 NW 13th with his wife and two married children. He asks supporters to help reach voters and expresses commitment to county city collaboration.
Bill Ray a clerk at Magnolia Petroleum Co was elected president of the Jaycees Monday night at the club meeting He will serve the unexpired term of Speedy Neiman who moved to Lamesa Bubba Hoermann and J W Sellers were elected new directors replacing Ray and Bill Hyman
More than 200 persons are expected at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet to be held Friday at 7 30 p m in the Central Primary Cafeteria. W C Hewitt of Phillips Petroleum will speak on industrial development. Tickets cost 2 00 each and are available from chamber members or at the chamber office.
Gordon Whitworth hit a crucial free throw with seconds left to lift the Mustangs past Brownfield 39 38 and pull into a four way tie for the District 2 AAA lead with Pecos Kermit and Monahans. Jay Sherrard led with 12 points as Brownfield stalled most of the night.
